A TRIBE CALLED RED 'BREAD AND CHEESE' [SINGLE]
Ottawa-based producer and DJ crew A Tribe Called Red are back with their new single 'Bread and Cheese', taken from their Polaris Prize nominated LP 'Nation II Nation'. Famed for fusing native powwow music with contemporary genres such as dubstep and trap with inimitable effect, the trio's music offers something unlike anything you've heard before.
'Nation II Nation' follows on from the incredible success of their 2012 self-titled debut - which was also long-listed for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize (Canada's answer to the Mercury Prize, previously won by Arcade Fire and Feist) and included in the Washington Post's top 10 albums of the year alongside Frank Ocean and Jessie Ware - and sees the group expanding on their trademark sound: samples of drumming and vocal chants from aboriginal Canadians set to modern dance beats.
'Bread and Cheese' features the aboriginal drumming group Black Bear while the single's B-Side 'NDN Stakes' is a collaboration with the Sitting Bear vocal group - and this combination of old and new styles comes loaded with a powerful political and personal message. In continual support for the Idle No More civil rights movement, the group of aboriginal DJs create their music to promote the fight for native people's rights across North America which has seen them set up the successful monthly Electric Powwow party in their hometown, which showcases native talent and culture to consistently sold-out crowds.
