RENATA ROSA - 24th JULY

Renata Rosa will bring us the entrancing sounds of the north-east of Brazil enriched with the subtle inclusion of East European, Middle Eastern and North African influences. Her powerful voice, embracing polyphony and ritual-like singing, originated in the local tribal singing style where she originally trained as a singer. Her band will accompany her with ten and seven-string guitars and the percussion that is characteristic of the Brazilian Pernambuco state.

Her discography comprises three albums to date. Zunido de Mata in 2003, which won one of the most prestigious awards in international world music, the Choc de l’Année by the French magazine Le Monde de la Musique; followed by Manto dos Sonhos released in 2008, which won her Best Singer at the Brazilian Music Awards.

Her new album Encantações, where she also takes the role of artistic director, was chosen as one of the Top of the World list in Songlines magazine in the UK.

‘Rosa and her band flow through their set in a relaxed, almost telepathic empathy; their unhurried preparations contrasting sharply with the driving energy of the music.’
NEIL MCFADYEN (FOLK RADIO UK)

‘Renata Rosa manages to present Brazil’s musical roots in a modern guise, celebrating widely unknown facets of Brazilian music culture.’
TIM GARCIA – MUSICA MACONDO, UK

‘It’s a mixture that in the hands of sensitive souls like Renata Rosa is a complete joy to hear.’

HAT FITZ & CARA - 25th JULY

Aussie mountain man meets beautiful Irish Colleen. Yes, it’s all been said before, but the combination of Hat Fitz’s reconstructed Delta Blues brought to you via a battered National Steel guitar, and Cara’s inventive drumming, soulful vocals, frantic washboard and haunting Irish whistle playing, makes this pair one of the most sensational duos around.

‘Aussie bluesman and Irish Songstress get married, form a band and make great music together. This shabby hill country blues oozes cool’
GUITAR AND BASS MAGAZINE

‘They pack more energy, emotion and sheer musical exuberance into one song than most manage in a whole career.’
SPIRAL EARTH

‘Covering a staggering array of instrumentation, the duo embellish impeccable rootsy originals & Robinson shows she can belt it out too.’

CHAKA DEMUS & PLIERS - 28th JULY

Jamaica’s reggae stars Chaka Demus and Pliers have announced they are to tour the UK for the first time in over ten years during July and August 2018

The tour also marks the 25th anniversary since Chaka Demus & Pliers exploded onto the UK chart scene in 1993, when the duo scored six UK top 40 hits in just fourteen months, including Tease MeMurder She WroteShe Don’t Let Nobodyand their Number 1 hit cover of The Top Notes’ Twist and Shout.

When Chaka Demus and Pliers teamed-up in 1991 they were already established musicians with successful solo careers. What followed was an extremely prolific period, with the pair releasing no fewer than three albums in 1992 (Gal Wine Wine WineBad Mind and Ruff This Year) and performing at Reggae Sunsplash in the same year.

International success followed for the duo, with their 1993 single Tease Mereaching No.3 during a three month stay on the UK chart, and their album of the same name also reaching No. 1, selling over 500,000 and certified gold in the process.

When their single Twist and Shout reached No.1 on the 2nd January 1994, Chaka Demus & Pliers became the first Jamaican act to top the UK single charts in eight years, and the first to have three consecutive Top Five hits.

With a new single called You Are The One due for release on 13th July and a new album in the pipeline, Chaka Demus said, “Coming to the UK for this tour is very special for us, as the UK is where we had our first hits outside of Jamaica. We still have a lot of new tunes to bring our UK fans, along with all our hits. We feel that this tour is truly the return of Chaka Demus and Pliers.”

JEFF LANG - 28th JULY

John Butler has said ‘Seeing Jeff Lang was like being in church for three hours – a totally sacred event.’ Certainly when considering Jeff Lang’s music it’s easy to run out of superlatives. Influenced in equal parts by the elemental blues of Blind Willie Johnson and Skip James, the songwriting of Bob Dylan and Richard Thompson, and the guitar of Ry Cooder and Jimi Hendrix, the Australian Weissenborn magician explores a sonic palette as eclectic as it’s stunning.

JEFF LANG - Sat 28 Jul 2018 | 8pm | £15* | Seated
