CLEAN CUT KID is an English band from Liverpool. The band consists of four members; Mike Halls on lead vocals and guitar, Evelyn Halls on backing vocals and keys, Ross Higginson on drums and Gareth Bullock on bass guitar. The band formed in 2012 and released their debut single ‘Vitamin C’ in summer of 2015 followed by their debut album Felt in 2017.

If I had to pigeon-hole them, I would slide them into the ‘lo-fi alternate indie rock’ section. The band are no strangers to gruelling tour schedules, proving this in 2016 when they played an impressive 91 shows and appeared at 31 festivals across five countries, we were invited to the Southampton show where they were promoting their latest album Painwave which landed on March 29th (the day that the UK were meant to be leaving Europe - at least someone managed to deliver on time!)

Painwave is their sophomore release and includes tracks, ‘I Don’t Like You I Love You’ and ‘Emily’, which were both previously released as singles ahead of the album release.

Opening up the evenings entertainment was Southampton musician JAKAN, a super talented singer who was accompanied by a guitarist, keyboard player and drummer, his output was similar to Clean Cut Kid so warmed the room up tremendously before the main act took to the stage!

THE JOINERS is an ‘intimate’ venue, but this didn’t stop Clean Cut Kid from playing a loud set! The gig was actually sold out and judging by the army of fans singing along to all of the songs, including the newer tracks, it was apparent that they were all die hard fans who had come to see their idols at work. Mike Halls juggled his front man duties with that of a stand up comedian between tracks, keeping the room entertained, something he really has a knack for!

With an interesting fashion style and a voice that appeals to all, Mike Halls really was the centre of attention throughout their set, full credit goes to him for the ability to switch between upbeat songs that make you want to jump and sing along, to slow melodies which saw the crowd swaying as one in unison. There was an amazing vibe at this gig and every section of the crowd was super friendly and happy to live in the moment together as one.
