Eliza Shaddad Reveals title track from upcoming EP....

Credit: Melanie Tjoeng

Born to Sudanese and Scottish parents with deep artistic heritage, Eliza Shaddad draws from a rich wealth of creative resource. A descendent of a long line of artists and poets dating back to the 1800’s, Eliza’s great great grandfather was James Paterson, one of the Glasgow Boys – a group of artists challenging the style and subject of late Victorian Scottish painting.

Title track Run, revealed today, harnesses that power of provocation; “Run from me far and fast as you can before I ruin you”, Shaddad cries. It’s a deeply confessional sentiment, damning and yet liberating, and as unyielding as it is helplessly fragile.

“This song has a life of its own, and I think half our total studio time was probably spent just trying to tame it.  It’s merciless in parts, musically, and lyrically, and a total beast to play live; getting to the end in one piece can actually be kind of cathartic.

Mercury Music Prize nominated Chris Bond’s influence here is clearly evident. The track is brooding, almost bursting with sensation.  Catherine Marks (Wolf Alice/Foals) on mixing duties and John Davis (Blur/FKA Twigs/Royal Blood) on mastering complete the breadth of talent behind this toweringly expansive, devastatingly intimate sound.

Run follows previous single Wars, a release which helped position Shaddad as one of the most exciting UK artists breaking through this year. This enthusiasm threads right from stations like BBC Radio 1, Radio X and Beats 1, through to left of center US style titles such as Nylon, Fader, and the UK’s Wonderland. Of course tastemakers have been right behind Shaddad from the word go, but now the wheels are truly turning.

Eliza has announced a string of 17 dates across the UK and Europe with a headline London show on the 31st of March at The Sebright Arms.

Run EP will be released on the 18th of March via Beatnik Creative.
