FEATURE: THE BEAT takeover EXETER PHOENIX on Saturday 1st February....
Exeter Phoenix are thrilled to welcome The Beat featuring Ranking Jr back to their stage on Saturday, 1st February.
This legendary band, a cornerstone of the U.K. ska revival of the late '70s and early '80s, continues to captivate audiences with their unique blend of pop melodies and taut rhythms.
The Early Days
Formed in Birmingham, England, The Beat burst onto the scene with their debut single, "Tears of a Clown" b/w "Ranking Full Stop", released through the Specials' 2-Tone label in 1979. The single soared to the Top Ten in the U.K., and the band soon struck a deal with Arista to distribute their own Go Feet label.
Rise to Fame
Their 1980 album, I Just Can’t Stop It, released by Sire in the United States, went gold in England, thanks to the hit single "Mirror in the Bathroom". The Beat's ferocious performances and clever blend of personal and political lyrics made them stars at home and won them a worldwide following.
The Sad Passing of Ranking Roger
The band faced a heartbreaking moment with the passing of their beloved frontman, Ranking Roger in 2019. His unique voice and stage presence left an indelible mark on the music world, and his loss was deeply felt by fans and fellow musicians alike.
The Beat Today
Despite the loss, the spirit of The Beat lives on. Ranking Jr, Roger's son, has taken up the mantle and is now in control of the microphone, ensuring that the band's legacy continues. The Beat's music remains as vibrant and relevant as ever, and their upcoming performance at Exeter Phoenix promises to be a night to remember.
