Field Music, formed in Sunderland in 2004, consisting of Andrew Lowther, Kev Dosdale, Liz Corney and brothers David and Peter Brewis (One time drummer for fellow Sunderland band The Futureheads) played at the Phoenix on Saturday night to a crowd of fans that wouldn’t have looked out of place at the Hubbox…

Their music, dubbed ‘prog-pop’ by the British music press is a heady mix of experimental and traditional sounds and for the few fans old enough to remember, very reminiscent of their predecessors, Talking Heads. This is real music for muso’s… Not a tracksuit or baseball cap in sight and with singer, David Brewis looking spookily like a young Mark E Smith has all the hallmarks of cool.

Playing some choice tracks from their new album ‘Commontime’, the guys produced a very clean, crisp sound with distinct drum beat and polished vocals, the brothers seamlessly playing lead-singer tag on the mic, bantering with the audience like old pro’s.

They had a set list, but I’m not really sure they stuck to it, however polished they were, they were playing the gig more like a jam session than a rehearsed set, which, together with their witty repartee, made the whole situation feel like you were their guests , rather than paying customers.
