Glasgow alt-rock quartet DEAD PONY recently announced details of a 7 date December headline tour as well as a bunch of Summer shows to help promote their stunning debut album ‘Ignore This’.

Whilst they were tripping around Europe, we caught up with Anna from the band and asked her a bunch of questions, here’s how we got on!

You’re called DEAD PONY, cool name, how did it come about?

When coming up with our name we wanted something that sounded cool but also didn’t take itself too seriously. I think that Dead Pony sums up our style so much, it’s quite dark but also there’s something quite poetic about it too.

You’re from Glasgow, tell me about the music scene there at the moment...

The Glasgow music scene took a mega hit during Covid and a lot of amazing bands that we grew up playing with sadly called it quits. It felt like for a while that the scene in Glasgow was suffering but over the past few years there have been some really cool young bands coming out and now there is a really supportive and thriving scene again.

What is your favourite live music venues in the city?

Barrowlands - 100%. We’ve played there a couple of times now and you can just feel the energy of all the icons that have played there over the years. It’s always been a dream of mine to headline that venue. It holds so much history and the sound/atmosphere is unrivalled.

Your sound is amazing, I detect a hint of industrial-ness in there along with the rock, please share any bands or acts that have influenced you as a band?

We are so inspired by the bands and artists that we grew up listening to. In particular we are influenced by The Prodigy, Paramore, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Incubus, Nelly Furtado, Gwen Stefani.

So our readers can prepare themselves for your winter tour, please describe a typical DEAD PONY live show (if there is such a thing!)

It’s hot !!! We always bring the energy to our live shows and we have a set prepared that is stacked full of bangers. Be prepared for moshing and mega high energy.

You have announced a 7-date tour which takes place in early December, are there any places on the tour that you are yet to play?Which of the shows/places are you MOST excited about?

All of the places on this tour we’ve played a couple of times before. I think I’m most excited for London & Manchester as those crowds are always so up for it but I think the whole tour is going to be insane.

Are there any things that you simply CANNOT live without whilst on the road?

We all try to look after ourselves on the road or else it just becomes a bit miserable when you’re feeling sluggish and spending half of your time sitting in the van. Necessities for us are yoga mats, weights & lots of fruit and honey.

Will you be planning on doing any sightseeing during the tour? If so, what?

Honestly probably not. On tour we’re lucky if we have a few hours free in the afternoon and we usually spend that working out/eating or resting. We always like to find a good place to eat in each city though and we’re always on the look out for cool bars.

Your critically acclaimed debut album ‘Ignore This’ is out now, and you have received some incredible comments from some serious tastemakers, how does it feel when you read these?

It’s really nice because it just reaffirms that we’re doing something good and worth talking about. In reality, we made the album first and foremost for our fans and for ourselves but it’s always good to read what other people thing of it.

Please tell me about the studio you used to record the album and who was involved as well as the band?

We recorded in a studio in Inveraray called The Cottage Music Studios which has sadly closed down now. Everything we have done on the album has been totally self produced. Our guitarist is a crazy good producer so he recorded all of the album and then we got Dan Austin to mix the album for us.

Ahead of the tour in December, you’ve got a well packed summer calendar including appearances at some great festivals including 2000 Trees, TRNSMT, YNOT, Kendal Calling and Reading & Leeds, have you attended any of these in the past as punters?

We’ve been to TRNSMT a few times. We went in like 2017 or 18 to see Radiohead and it was one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to in my life. I’ve always wanted to go to Reading & Leeds so I’m excited to play this year.

Please share your top three festival survival tips....

  1. Lots of water/electrolytes

  2. Tissues

  3. Sun cream

You’re also playing festivals in Germany, Czech Republic, France and The Netherlands, have you played overseas yet?

We’ve been on a EU tour once before and we’re currently on tour with Against The Current before we play these EU festivals. We love playing in mainland Europe because the crowds are always so up for it and the hospitality is amazing.

Please share the names of some bands or acts that YOU are currently enjoying....

Recently ive been loving Kid Kapichi, Poppy & Skindred

Please tell me the best place to keep up to date with your musical happenings?
