INTERVIEW: We caught up with MILO GORE ahead of his slot at Bristol's OUTER TOWN FESTIVAL on April 13....
Ahead of OUTER TOWN which takes place at various venues in Bristol on 13 April, we wanted to chat to bands and artists performing so YOU can plan your day. Next up is an immensely talented artist called MILO GORE
Please describe your act/band in one sentence
Anthemic, raw and unapologetic.
Please tell us a fascinating fact about you or the band that not many people would know
Much like the Defence Against The Arts teaching position in the Harry Potter series, the position of the bass player in my band is jinxed. I’ve had 4 different bass players in two years!
Who would you cite as a major influence on you/your band?
Cor, that’s a tough question. ‘Who’ is tough, I could name a number of musicians and bands, like Ben Howard, Bears Den and Daughter, who have inspired me lyrically. But when it actually comes to the music I’d have to say my friends who I play music with. When I went to uni, I was just your bog standard indie acoustic singer songwriter. But having met different musicians along the way, my sound has really transformed and opened up. Bandmates added punk, rock, pop, electronic, and many, many more styles to my musical vocabulary. ‘What’ has influenced my music is a much easier question to answer, and something I believe forms my musical identity a lot more than ‘who’, and that is my life and my experiences. Lyrics, overall feel and emotion is the first thing I look to when I write a song, which really comes from my life experiences.
When did your relationship with Outer Town 24’ start?
I attended last year, as I had a couple of friends playing. As soon as I went along and saw the first act, I thought this is something I wanted to be involved in. So I immediately got in contact for next year.
Have you played Outer Town Festival before?
No, this is my first year! It’s my first gig of 2024 too, so more than anything I just can’t wait to be back on stage. I also think Outer Town Festival is a great way to connect with the Bristol music scene. So I’m just excited to have the chance to be in and amongst that again.
What was your reaction when you knew you would be playing there this year?
I was gassed to be honest, just really excited to be involved.
From the bands announced so far, who are you looking forward to seeing and who would you hope may yet make it onto the bill?
Super excited to watch Ugly, Milo’s Planes & Heavy Lungs, but also super gutted that Wakey Wakey Rise & Shine are on at the same time as me, as I’ve always wanted to catch one of their shows. I was also hoping the Get Down Service boys would make another appearance this year, as their shows are always brilliant. Actually scrap that, just seen they’ll be playing a DJ set, which is very exciting indeed, as that is sure to pop off!!
Bristol is an amazing place, what do you love about it?
The best. I’m proud to call it my home. I just love the people here. There is an overwhelming sense of community, and that just feeds into all aspects of life here, including the music scene, which is filled with so much support and love.
Dream festival Lineup (can be dead or alive)
Bloody hell, that’s a hard one. Gonna limit myself to 5 acts that I’m rinsing at the moment (in no particular order of course). Chet Baker, Ben Howard, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Medium Build, Royal Otis. A real mixed bag there haha!
Finally, why should a festival punter make an effort to attend Outer Town Festival this year?
It’s an epic festival. A bunch of amazing acts, across a number of amazing venues, all on one road. Times are tough financially, but the ticket price compared to what is on offer is really good value for money. I went last year as a punter and had the best time. A whole bunch of likeminded music lovers all on one street is a recipe for a good time!
