INTRODUCING EXETER BASED 4 PIECE PUNK ALT ROCK COMBO 'JOKERS GAMBLE'....
Jokers Gamble are a four piece boy/girl/boy/girl punk/alt rock band from Exeter, they formed in October 2014 and have played gigs mainly in the city.
I stumbled upon them in their student house where they were arguing over the last sachet of 'instant' ready brek so I decided to treat them all to breakfast providing they sit and answer some questions for our world famous 'Introducing' section.
We decamped to the local Wetherspoons where breakfasts were ordered, hot chocolates were supped and copious sachets of ketchup/brown sauce were stolen for their kitchen cupboards. Prior to the breakfasts arriving, we had a chat about people who talk during movies, sharing everything and life on Mars, here's how we got on....
Please introduce the band and your music in one sentence....
Exeter-based alternative punk-rock band with blackjack and hookers.
You’re called Jokers Gamble, how did you go about choosing this name?
Kiss my shiny metal arse!
How and when did you decide that you wanted to be in a band?
Tom suggested we should be in a band. Then we went to buy booze. And then he disappeared. So now we’re a band. We miss you, Tom.
You guys have just released the track ‘Bitch’ there’s a great alt-punk vibe to this, who is the arrogant bitch in the song and please tell us how the song came about?
The song is about a girl who really got on my (Their) nerves in first year. One night we were watching a Disney film and she told me to not, under any circumstances, talk. And then she talked. Throughout the entire film. And naturally I was so angry I had to write a song about it.
Tell us why, people should come to a Jokers Gamble live show?
Because our drummer is hot. Smoking hot. (Just kidding. Sorry, Dom)
Which act/band made you want to get a band together?
Tom! Also Fall out Boy. (Adrian has no idea.)
Would you rather live with a dog that sings lullabies or a gorilla that can do sign language? Explain your answer
Cynthia: Gorilla. If you teach him sign language and you go out and get wasted you can tell him to carry you home. (Dom goes for the dog, because they’re cute enough, and if they could sing lullabies, that would be damn cute). Dom: Good luck taming a fucking gorilla. Adrian: dogs are irritating.
In your opinion, what is the BEST album/record ever released and why?
Dom: In Utero – Nirvana. Steve Albini + Nirvana = perfection.
Theres: Good love is on the way – John Mayer. Eargasm.
Cynthia: American Idiot – Green Day. Made me cry in the kitchen, on the floor, like a baby.
Adrian: Kirisute Gomen – Trivium. Just listen to it.
Tell me a fascinating fact about you or one of your band members?
Cynthia can fit her entire fist in her mouth. Also her butt is famous in Japan. Adrian has a tank driving license. Dom is weirdly good at hula-hooping.
If you had a chance to put together your own ‘super group’, who would be in it? (only living members please)
Travis Barker, Flea, John Meyer, Adele. They’ll probably get on. Right?
How do you feel social media is helping you and being an unsigned band how hard is it to get noticed?
It’s really hard to get noticed. Exeter is full of small bands and small venues. There’s not a big gig scene, people prefer to go clubbing. Social media means it’s easier to put yourself out there, but also that there’s more competition. It’s hard to get people to click on our links. Also your friends start hating you for spamming them on facebook. What’s cool is that you can release music straight away.
Is there something you would like to tell each of the band members that you haven’t told them before?
We share everything, even our toothbrushes!
What classic song would you have liked to have recorded and why?
Life on Mars – David Bowie
Name three people (alive, dead or fictional) that you would like as party guests?
Johnny Depp, Martin Freeman, Abradolf Linkler (from Rick & Morty)
There are many good bands and musicians out there, who would you ask the readers of musicmuso to look out for?
DeathStar Disco have just released their EP. Find them on iTunes and Spotify. They have a shitload of attitude!
Who would you like to know has your music on their iPod, MP3 or cassette walkman?
Aaron Paul (Music, bitch!). Or Samuel L. Jackson.
If you could describe your music in the form of a fictional character, who would it be?
Abradolf Linkler. It’s a bit weird, but it kinda works…
Do you think we can ever live in a world where a chicken can cross the road without having its motives questioned?
I need to be stoned to answer this question. (Cynthia)
What are your plans for 2015?
Record an EP, win Battle of the Bands, conquer the world. And keep our livers going…
