October 2021 - Jonny Spalding is an artist with a really edgy, upfront approach to making music. This talented performer doesn’t follow the rules, and as a result, his music feels really groundbreaking and personal. unconcerned with trends, but really aiming to make an impact and allow the listeners to truly empathise with the overall vision that drives him.
Jonny’s most recent studio work is titled Community, and it is safe to say, it is not the kind of musical statement that will be left unnoticed! They say that creativity can move mountains, and Community is definitely a good example of how far it can take an artist. Experimenting with a diverse group of UK musicians, including Sharlene Hector (Armand Van Helden, Bassment Jaxx), Soulful J Appiah (Jess Glynn), Folk Singer-songwriter Emma Ballantine, Jazz Trumpeter Freddie Gavita & DJ Amy Lauren, Jonny recorded songs and sounds rooted in his love of electronic music alongside engineer Hugh Fothergill (Volleyball) to create a compilation/Mix-tape that draws on the community approach to his music. Highlights of Community include Break Me, featuring J Appiah, a sultry lo-fi electronic ballad, and Hole In My Heart, which hit #1 on Beatport Deep-house chart in Summer 2021.
This release is spot-on, not only giving Jonny the opportunity to explore music in a whole new way, but also allowing him to write music that feels catchy, yet personal and expressive at the same time. Instead of having to choose between mass-appeal and artistic integrity, Jonny expertly managed to achieve both end goals, creating something truly remarkable that will stand the test of time.
