“The very definition of first rate rock” - Absolute Punk

JPNSGRLS — pronounced ‘Japanese Girls‘ — are a 4-piece who formed in Vancouver in 2010, with a collective desire to make music inspired by fun and recreated with loud, fast, sweaty and danceable live sets.  They play a  cross-over high energy stand of music, combining elements of QOTSA’s experimentation alternative rock mixed with pop-punk and indie  influences.

JPNSGRLS debut 'The Sharkweek EP' was released in 2013, an experimental grab-bag of styles including barbed wire guitar riffs, emotionally aching pop-rock, and futuristic electronics.

With their debut album Circulation, JPNSGRLS have maintained their signature eclecticism, but eschewed unnecessary frills in favour of electrifying live energy and a more cohesive, focused style.  The entire album was recorded in just one week at Vancouver's Greenhouse Studios with producer Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat, Fur Trade, Mounties) and mastered by world renowned engineer Greg Calbi (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tame Impala, MGMT).

"We wanted to get it sounding as live and raw as possible," guitarist Oliver Mann says, noting that nearly all of the parts can be replicated live. Frontman Charlie Kerr offers, "Something we said a lot in the studio was, 'What would the Pixies do?' We went with simplicity a lot of the time, and I think that's a really good thing."

This less-is-more approach makes Circulation a whirlwind of straight-out-of-the-garage noisiness and earworm hooks. It starts with the feedback squeal of combustible opener "Smalls”, a song that explores the excitement and self-destruction of drug use and takes its name from the classic coming-of-age film The Sandlot. This leads into "Tiger," which shifts between spiky riffs and cloud-scraping, vintage pop choruses that feature Bays on backup harmonies. Elsewhere, "Southern Comforting" is an atmospherically echoing scorcher that explores toxic relationships — both with people and with alcohol — while the thundering "Mushrooms" takes its title from the Sylvia Plath poem of the same name and is an anthem about fighting back against oppression.

JPNGRLS release their debut album Circulation (CD/Vinyl/Download) and the digital single “Smalls’ on 6th April, both via Light Organ Records.  Album teaser “Brace Yourself” is available for you to enjoy below....
