Following the release of his acclaimed ninth album, "watch my moves" in 2022, Kurt Vile embarks on a journey across eight UK cities, setting the stage for a night of sonic exploration and introspective bliss. With his unique blend of folk-rock and dreamy textures, Vile has garnered immense critical acclaim, solidifying his place as a revered artist in the contemporary music landscape.

Before diving into the much-anticipated gig, it's essential to explore Kurt Vile's musical journey. Vile first gained recognition as a member of the Philadelphia-based band The War on Drugs, where his distinctive guitar work and introspective songwriting left an indelible mark. Following his departure from the band, Vile embarked on a solo career, releasing a string of critically acclaimed albums that showcased his lyrical prowess and masterful command of sonic landscapes.

The Magnificence of "watch my moves" has earned widespread praise from critics and fans alike. The album has been hailed as a remarkable achievement, earning accolades as Album of the Year from renowned publications such as Uncut, MOJO, and The Observer. The collection of 15 tracks exhibits Vile's signature gentle psychedelia, effortlessly meandering through musical landscapes, and enveloping listeners in his preternatural serenity. With his keen ability to find just the right musical moments, Vile's album resonates as a soothing balm for the soul.

Opening act King Hannah are a band that have flown under my radar for far too long. Hailing from Liverpool and led by the creative force of Hannah Merrick and Craig Whittle, I can happily say that they have firmly landed in my world, bringing with them their sonic mood swings and intoxicating, layered offerings. 

King Hannah's use of multiple guitars allowed them to push the boundaries of their melodies, expanding the possibilities of what a song could convey. Each guitar seemed to have its own voice, playing complementary melodies that wove together seamlessly. The result was an otherworldly experience, as the band's melodic prowess took center stage, resonating deep within the hearts of the audience.

The band's guitar-heavy soundscapes were further enhanced by the haunting vocals of frontwoman Hannah Merrick. Her ethereal voice floated atop the layers of guitars, adding a dreamlike quality to the performance. The combination of Merrick's emotive singing and the intricate guitar arrangements created an atmosphere that was both introspective and transportive.

Rushing soundscapes that contain a sound that is both brand new and completely mature, littered with neon guitar lines and intimate torchlight vocals, they lifted spirits with their melodic licks that swelled into dense and swirling walls of sound, creating a beautifully atmospheric soundscape inside the venue. Their live set captivated the audience this evening and by the size of the queue at the mercy table after their show, it was clear that they had won over a bunch of new fans.

Following on, Bristol’s SWX was transformed into a haven of musical tranquility as Kurt Vile took the stage. The venue's intimate and vibrant atmosphere served as the perfect backdrop for Vile's captivating performance as he wasted no time, launching into the opening number, 'Palace of OKV in reverse'. The crowd was very well behaved, but appreciative of what they were being treated to.

Kurt and his band continued making their way through the set list, with the band disappearing into the backstage area for a couple of songs, leaving just Vile on the stage with his acoustic guitar where he performed an exquisite version of 'Bassackwards', and after a short introduction, he burst into 'Hey Like A Child' which pleased the masses who had attended for this celebration of music.

‘Hunchback’ was the first big finish of the night, with a few more singing along and getting involved, before the short break and the band coming back for 'Like Exploding Stones' and 'cool water', both of which went down as firm crowd favourites.

Kurt switched things up by ending with 'Punks In The Beerlight', a cover of the Silver Jews hit. And then that was it….. After a long wait for Kurt Vile to return to Bristol, he was back and delivered the goods, the show certainly lived up to expectations and was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance.

Kurt Vile and the Violators’ Bristol performance at SWX marks a significant moment for both the band and their devoted fans. It offered a rare opportunity to witness his transcendent live performance and immerse oneself in the enchanting melodies of his latest work. As the European summer tour and festival circuit beckon, this Bristol gig was certainly a highlight on Vile's journey, which allowed the audience to witness firsthand, the magic that unfolds when an extraordinary artist takes the stage.
