KYLA LA GRANGE - CUT YOUR TEETH - ALBUM REVIEW
Watford based musician Kyla La Grange has dropped new album ‘Cut Your Teeth’, swerving from the folky eerie sounds of her debut ‘Ashes’ to a more harmonious electronica sound that haunts the ears and gives the perfect wind down after a long night under the mirror ball. Think Robyn with a bit more danger and a dash more menace, complete with sexy oozing slow down tracks thrown in the mix.
First single and title track, ‘Cut Your Teeth’ effortlessly flows between basic synthesizers to a darker sinister bass chorus line whilst beautiful harmonies are fused alongside delicate vocals. Third track ‘Cannibals’ flashes back to a Massive Attack sound that can drift you into a perfect dream fantasy, just imagine a world slowed down and this will be the perfect soundtrack as it elegantly climaxes to a pulsing heartbeat.
Second single ‘The Knife’ still brings the melancholy lyrics but with a quirky subtle Caribbean twist as steel drums add a new unique touch to an overall sophisticated underrated electronica album. Kyla’s voice is unique, touching and wistful, particularly on track ‘Never That Young’ as she is accompanied by a soulful male voice in the form of Leicester based folk singer Jinnwoo.
Whilst some songs do seem acute compared to others, there are some really promising tracks on here that define a subtle electronica turn which works perfectly alongside Kyla’s delicate and emotive performances. I suggest next time you’re in from a long night out dancing on the tiles, kick off your heels and curl up with your kebab to this album for the perfect wind down.
Favourite tracks: Final track ‘Lyssa’ for its perfect heart wrenching power ballad tones to finish a stand out, subtle electronica album with a moving and innovative vocal performance throughout. Trust me, you’ll be singing along to this one, arms in the air feeling the music running through your veins and loving life.
