Lost Pets is a Nottingham based band that despite being under a year old have already managed to speed success by landing gigs across the country as well as writing and recording their own tracks, in fact the band is so new that before May 2014 these girls had never met each other. They were brought together by answering to an advert “for untalented girls who can’t play their instruments”; but what’s clear to see in this short space of time is that these girls can most definitely play their instruments and they can most definitely write their own fantastic music. They recently uploaded 3 of their live tracks to Bandcamp,  we logged on and had a listen….

The first track ‘Diamonds and Cobblestones’ gives a gorgeous warm sultry tone set for a romance to dance under fairy lights, resulting in glorious wistful fireworks as vocalist Becky’s delicate voice is set amongst a beautiful accompaniment of gentle percussion from drummer Lisa. Whilst the band describe themselves as upbeat indiepop party they also declare to keep writing melancholic folk pop songs by accident, which sums up the tone of this track in particular, a poignant forlorn song that will set hearts a flutter.

‘Get Out’ is a bit more upbeat and a bit more indie with British guitar riffs as a soft ska sound is laced throughout from what will come to be the iconic inclusion of trombone fabulously played by Hannah. The bass from Verity is funky and sweet with girl empowering lyrics such as “I’m sorry I don’t want to be a housewife”, all whilst multi-tasker Hayley brings all sorts of delightful treats with her knack at incorporating glockenspiel for a magical touch.

‘Richard Loves Doris’ opens with angelic choral harmonies before blending effortlessly into a sixties hippy love pop dream. A short Beatles-esque boppy tune that tells a story of confused love complete with trombone that has personality, a complete group ensemble that will get you tapping your foot along before you even know it. On this particular song the band of girls showcase a brilliant knack for playing well together as a group, an amazing feat considering the short space of time they’ve known each other, what’s clear to hear is the commitment and rehearsals that have gone into ensuring the sound they make is confident and professional.

Lost Pets are set to embark on more dates in Glasgow and Nottingham as well as promising new music to delight us with. If a band less than a year old can produce this type of catchy, fun yet mournful music in this space of time then I am definitely excited to see what more they can bring in the coming months as they mature and grow into a bona fide indie girl band.
