Manchester based TOBI SUNMOLA dropped by for a chat before RADIO 1'S BIG WEEKEND....
Tobi Sunmola is a Manchester based alternative/rap/hip hop songwriter, we heard that he had been hand picked to appear at the Radio 1 Big Weekend in Exeter and thought it would be good to have a chat to him to find out a little bit more about him, here's how we got on....
For the lucky people who are coming to the Radio 1 Big Weekend, please would you introduce yourself and your music?
My name is Tobi Sunmola, 22 year old artiste from Manchester with Nigerian roots.
You’re playing the BBC Introducing stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend on Sunday 29th May, how did you feel when you heard?
It is great to be honoured by the BBC and to know one of the biggest platforms in the UK is in support of what I do.
How did it all come about?
BBC introducing Manchester has supported my work in the past. When I released 'Run Free' it was picked up by Radio 1 and 1xtra. I guess the stars aligned!
You’re from Manchester, how would you describe the music scene there at the moment?
Manchester is a place with a lot of heritage and culture, also a lot of hidden talent the UK does not know about yet. I won't say there is a scene at the moment although they are a few artistes doing great things. I believe with time Manchester could be the greatest hub for music in the UK.
I just checked out your track ‘Run Free’, pretty impressive, what influenced you to write the song?
Run free was influenced by artist named Mark Rothko whose work is presented at the Tate art gallery in London.
How has BBC Introducing helped you as an artist?
Yeah, the BBC introducing in Manchester team has been a great support to not just me but a lot of artistes in Manchester. They do a lot of groundwork trying to push the sound out and their efforts help push the music to where it can be heard.
Who are you MOST excited about seeing at the R1BW this year?
Skepta, Stormzy and Izzy Bizu.
What advice would you give to an artist or band who is thinking of getting in touch with BBC Introducing?
