musomusofm on the radar playlist #15 - Fake Dad, Kadi, Brad Grobler, Jess Porter, Imogen Halsey, Jesse Grosi and more....

Goodness me, is it really the 5th February already? blink and you’ll miss it!

Yes folks, it’s super busy over at musomuso towers and as a result of the amount of new music that has come our way over Christmas and the new year period, we are having to upload a new playlist every 2-3 days just to cope with demand!

We only host 9 tracks on each playlist, I know what you’re thinking, why not double it and reduce the amount of playlists that you put out? good question and I’m going to answer it by saying that the template I use for the artwork is a 3 x 3 grid which allows 9 slots for pictures to be inserted. Yes, I could stick two of these together to form an image of 18 acts but you know what, I think it’s nice having a 9 track, 30 minute playlist that doesn’t really involve any investment from the listener. You can press play at lunchtime, on a walk or even on your daily commute and by the time the journey is over, you will have been exposed to 9 brand new tracks that I almost guarantee you will not have heard before.

I feel better after getting that off my chest….

As usual, underneath the embedded playlist, you will find details of our featured bands and artists, please take some time to read their bios and if you have the chance, click on their socials, give them a ‘like’ if you enjoyed what you heard and maybe see if they’re planning on playing any live dates in your neck of the woods and go along to show your support.

See you on the other side…..

Fake Dad

Andrea de Varona and Josh Ford aka Fake Dad make music from their tiny Brooklyn studio/apartment. Since the beginning of 2018, they have been inseparable, with a love of music at the centre of their relationship long before they started writing together. With a signature production sound and distinct vocal style, they create a consistent and engaging framework for their unique perspectives. Although Andrea and Josh come from different musical backgrounds, they share a common goal: to create something that understands you. Fake Dad is always there to give you a friendly pat on the back and a warm cup of cocoa after a long, hard day. They want you to know that everything is going to be okay…..

Fake Dad wrote and produced "John Cusack" with producer Danny Ross. Written over Zoom during the height of Covid, this song effortlessly came together, inspired by the thought that John Cusack in "Say Anything" is really just the Proto-Soft-Boy.

This energetic, drum n bass inspired track is a sickly-sweet love song about an 80s, John Hughes-type crush in a modern world. In the coming weeks, we will be harassing John Cusack on Twitter in the hopes that he will make a music video with us.

Kadi

Kadi, a 22 year old emerging singer/songwriter from South East London started taking song writing seriously from the age of 16 and makes emotive pop/soul music drawing influence from early favourites Otis Redding, Fantasia, Vanessa Carlton, Demi Lovato etc. With plans to continue releasing music this year, her desire is to encourage young adults who come from fatherless homes to deal with emotional and complex trauma through her music.

Kadi wrote this song for a friend who was in a dark place, She could relate massively to that feeling, in the season of her life where she was working through a lot, she really wanted to write something uplifting and encouraging because there really is a silver lining.
You may not always see it in the moment, it can take days, months or years but there is a Silverlining in the darkest of places, you just have to seek to find it.”
This track spent a long time in Kadi’s voice memos, since 2018 it’s been floating about but never came to anything, now, she is so excited that it's finally out and people can actually hear it.

Brad Grobler

Brad Grobler is a producer from The Netherlands and together with Myra Bro they have covered the Classic Cyndi Lauper track ‘Time After Time’.

For them, this is a song for 2022 with a very special meaning as Myra is recovering from a stroke and it was her ambition to learn how to talk and sing again which she has achieved (as you can hear) on this new version.

Brad’s studio closed in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic and he has been keeping himself busy by learning remote production skills and new possibilities from the internet.

As a singer Brad Grobler has performed on many releases, and has appeared at large festivals and events including Sunrise Festival Poland, Sensation Black Amsterdam, Park Pop, Lotto Arena, Antwerp to mention just a few.

For anyone who into their dance music around the early noughties, they may well remember a track called ‘Sunshine’ by Dance Nation which was a hit around the world of dance music, this featured the one and only Brad Grobler, here’s the video so you can have a watch!

Jess Porter

Jess Porter is a talented vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, bass, keyboards and involves himself in the sequencing of his tracks too. He includes Bon Iver, Joe Jackson, Beck, St Vincent, Regina Spektor, Neil Finn, Paul McCartney and Richard Dawson amongst his musical influences.

After spending a number of years on various musical projects (inuette, Catholic Guilt), Jess Porter returns to his solo project for the first release of new music since 2014.
Patterns is an exploration of the difficulty of altering our emotional pathways. The track blends synth and vocoder led melodies with a massive rhythm section and JP's signature complex guitar work, and is produced by long time collaborator Nick Russell.
JP's last single ‘Rearview Mirror’ saw widespread attention on Soundcloud and his dynamic solo shows continue to draw attention in Melbourne and beyond.

Imogen Halsey

Imogen Halsey is a singer-songwriter, actor and multi-instrumentalist based in Kilburn, London. She writes and performs songs on piano, guitar and cello. Her storytelling lyrics are mixed with lush strings and atmospheric grooves. She captures the attention of her audiences with passionate and ethereal vocals.

Her songs ‘Surrender’ and ‘Monday’ have both been featured on BBC Introducing Berkshire ahead of their release dates. She was commissioned by London Contemporary Voices to arrange and record a cello and vocal version of her song ‘Surrender’ and to create a video to accompany it.

As a songwriter, Imogen’s music spans genres from RnB and Soul to Indie Pop, evoking a young Joni Mitchell in her lyrics, and is influenced by Brandi Carlile in her musical exploration. As a trained musical theatre performer from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, she has both a powerful and intimate stage presence both when playing alone with her cello, or accompanied by a full band.

She was born and raised in Australia until she was 7 and feels a strong connection to both her birthplace and England, where she has lived since. Chris Martin, of Coldplay fame, once called her “one to watch” when she was a top 10 finalist of the ‘Make It Break It’ Singer Songwriter competition in 2007. There’s no written proof of this but you don’t forget a line like that in a hurry…

Imogen has recently released her debut EP of 3 songs which includes ‘Monday’, ‘Here To Stay’ and ‘Surrender’. The tracks showcase her as an artist: a multi-instrumentalist with clear and passionate vocals alongside heartfelt and poetic lyrics. These songs are only the beginning, she’s a hugely versatile artist with influences from dance, pop, classical and country/folk and as. Chris Martin said, she is definitely ‘one to watch’…..

Jesse Grosi

California-based musician, singer and songwriter Jesse Grossi bringing the sounds of yesteryear to the 21st century, Grossi captivates one with his laid back design and rich vocals. There is a warmth and tenderness to be found in a kaleidoscopic soundscape. The Los Angeles wonder-kid is once again confirming his inner talent, and his willingness to move forward.

No stranger to live performances, Jesse has had the pleasure of appearing regularly at key LA live music venues such as Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood, The Rainbow Room and the Canyon Club in Agora Hills, you might say that he is somewhat of a seasoned pro!

Of the track, Jesse says, “’Broken’ is an acoustic guitar song about my struggles with addiction. This heartfelt, very personal song will hopefully connect with anyone who has struggled with similar battles and feelings. It’s an Indie-Rock song with harmonious vocals and melodies. The struggle is real but you can always prevail with positivity.”
