musomusofm on the radar playlist #17 - Lost Youth, Frozen Inertia, John Bickel, Chris Morris and more....

As February trundles on, the nights are starting to get a little lighter and dare I say a little warmer too?

As you’re already aware, we have a TON of new tracks to get added to playlists so you’re seeing these popping up every 2-3 days now rather than once a week as they used to land.

The quality of the music I have been sent is literally stunning and to think that most of the acts have recorded their material using their own home studios is amazing and a delight to see that more people are getting involved with not only creating the music but also the production and mixing too.

We have 9 incredible tracks for you on this playlist, as usual, below the feature you will find a short bio and socials for our featured artists, please take the time to have a read and click on their links to learn more about any acts that tickle your fancy.

See you on the other side….

Lost//Youth

Lost//Youth, formed in 2021, bringing something new to the table while being reminiscent of bands from before their time.

Their debut EP, Chasing Shadows, is a concept album that explores the patterns in life and love that have led to darkness. The EP is about chasing love that can destroy and finding resolve in letting go. It’s about heartbreak and anger but also about lessons learnt along the way and the promise of healing.

The EP begins with ‘Too Late’, a song about a disillusioned lover’s fantasy of taking back power from someone that loved the chase but never stayed. Hauntingly aggressive ‘Burn Every Bridge’ follows, with the tale of a woman that can make you fall in love and slit your throat just as easily.

The third offering, Sinner “appears unadulterated, honest….and promises goose bumps, especially in the dynamically louder passages”, the “gently played guitar, which acts in unison with the emotional and sonorous lead vocals” brings out an “emotional ballad character” (Berlin on Air).

The final track, ‘Last Time’, is a triumphant promise to never again “let love change me”. The album ends on a determined note to never repeat the same mistakes.

John Bickel

Carried by vibrantly soulful vocals, set to the definition of a finger-snapping groove, and anchored by a lyrical call for harmony, John Bickel’s “Calling on Sunshine” is a stunning burst of perseverant joy. The track begins with hummed vocals that evoke a gospel choir warm-up, with things called to order by a rhythm on the two and four beats delivered via a crisp drum kit. It’s all stage setting for the main event: an effervescent chorus that enters immediately, delivered by Bickel with soaring vocals.

Bickel cites an eclectic range of retro influences, and many of them can be heard here; there are shades of Stevie Wonder’s soul and echoes of John Lennon’s energy. Sonically and lyrically, this is a trip straight to the mountaintop, and while Bickel is honest in reflecting on the step-by-step difficulty of the human experience, “Calling on Sunshine” never comes back down – it simply enters a groove and follows it home.

“The issues in the human condition need only light, clarity, truth and some honest communication to solve,” says Bickel. “I hoped to relay this message on a sailing groove.”

“Calling on Sunshine” is the first track released by John Bickel in 2022. It precedes a series of singles and a full album to be released later in the year.

Chris Morris

San Diego-based musician and producer Chris Morris has released a new instrumental album, ‘Calibration’ on January 7th. The 11 song project features Chris’ signature chilled out melodic beats with elements of lo-fi hip-hop, soul, and jazz.

He’s released a handful of retro-pop/soul albums, toured in places like Taiwan, Mexico, Canada, and the U.S., and produced music for commercials (Coca-Cola, Huawei, etc.).

Having started playing piano at age 5, Chris’ influences range from Stevie Wonder, Chicago, and Bob Marley to more contemporaries like Jamiroquai, Bonobo, and D’Angelo. He was also heavily influenced by hip-hop artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, and the Roots. These influences along with his years of experience have contributed through osmosis to the musicianship of this short, sweet, and subtle album.

This is his first instrumental lo-fi album, a bit of a departure to what he’s done but very natural and still very much with his own stamp on it.

Of the album, Chris added, “Though this is a very mellow album, it's short, sweet, and subtle so as to never tire the listener. This genre has helped me on a number of levels and it felt like the time was right to pay it forward the best way I know how!”
