musomusofm on the radar playlist #33 - Dan Morris, Tarn PK, Daverage J. Normal, Quinn Sternberg, Cris Cap and more....

It’s Sunday 13th March and the last week has dragged, I was back to the office on Monday and Tuesday and had to stay over in Bristol on Monday night and whilst I was there, I popped out to a great venue called The Lanes in the heart of the city to catch a couple of bands, if you get the chance, check out LAZY QUEEN from Oslo, Norway and SLUG PUPPIE from Bristol, both great acts that deserve your attention!

I have curated another 9 tracks from bands and artists all over the world and the results are incredible, normally, the playlist runs for circa 30 minutes each time but there is one track in this one that plays for an incredible 12 minutes, pushing the time up to nearly 43 minutes, nothing wrong with that I hear you cry but I just wanted you to know in case you only get 30 mins to enjoy it!

Hit the play button below, check out the bios and socials from our featured artists and if you like what you hear, please let me know so I can include acts on future playlists.

See you on the other side.

Dan Morris

Upcoming Birmingham based singer-songwriter Dan Morris released his new single ‘One for the broken hearted’ in time for Valentine’s Day. It’s a spirited emotive song which takes the listener on a hopeful journey. This song is a classic singer songwriter track which will give you a feeling of empowerment due to its uplifting lyrical content. The distorted guitar chords, powerful polyphonic vocal harmonies and acoustic piano crotchet pushes are staple elements of this track that help contribute to its overall introspective, melancholic mood of contemplation.

The track was written for those who were alone or unable to see their loved ones. The inspiration came from Jacob Leff (Drummer for UK indie band Cassia) who really struggled with not being able to see his Girlfriend when all those around him could. Dan took this idea and ran with it creating this song that is an empathetic message to anyone who feels alone or hurt.

Tarn PK

Tarn PK is a Wellington based artist, producer and songwriter.

Having released two EP’s, ‘Fantasy’ (2019) and ‘Monarch’ (2021), and a single ‘Daylight’ (2020) Tarn is looking to explore new sonic worlds and develop a more distinct style, setting him apart from the surrounding landscape. The ‘Fantasy’ EP, has gained close to 250k streams on Spotify mainly from lead single ‘Talk to You’ which landed on Spotify’s New Music Friday and other playlists. The ‘Monarch’ EP has collectively gained over 300k streams over all tracks to date.

Tarn’s music has also been placed on Apple playlists Having focused on more stripped back songwriting in the last EP, Tarn is starting to develop his first album of material, expanding into new sonic possibilities incorporating elements hyper pop, alt pop and more left of centre inflections.

The first single ‘Street Noise’ is a bridge from a quieter, more personal world into a more bombastic and upfront sound.

Of his latest track, Tarn said, “On ‘Street Noise’ I really wanted to make a song that felt like a journey and took you from one place and left you at another. Mixing together bedroom pop, folk, alternative and then completely switching this in the bridge was something I’d always wanted to experiment with. Some artists that come to mind when thinking of this song are Mustafa, James Blake and brakence. For me the song is about inner voices, fears and finding ways to deal with them. I really wanted to create a strong picture around the song, focused on vivid lyrics which subsequently pushed me to make an accompanying music video (my first foray into that world). This song is a gateway between the quieter, more inwards focused music of my last EP and something which is more bombastic and ‘out there’ sonically.”

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this interesting artist and look forward to his forthcoming material. Check him out on the socials below.

Daverage J. Normal

‘At the Precipice’ is the second EP from Electronic artist and producer Daverage J. Normal following on from his previous EP release of General Dysfunction in 2021 and the single releases of Dark Stars and Decompression.

This latest concept EP is an expression of insomnia explored through 3 interconnected tracks, each giving an impression of experienced stages of sleep deprivation, Approach, Engage, and Descent.

Approach has an ominous yet dreamy aesthetic, painting a picture of movement and weariness and an impression of tiredness where as much as you yearn for a resolution, it never comes.

Engage continues with a laid-back feel, however it lifts you up into a more driven and at times manic state of mind as you accept sleep will not come and you must power through regardless of the whispers at the back of your mind.

Descent takes you back to a sense of calm which quickly ramps up into a driven energy of determination, but always hinting at an undercurrent of yearning and the disconnectedness of a tired mind.

‘At the Precipice’ is presented as a 4 track EP, comprising the full 12 minutes as a whole and the three movements as their own standalone pieces. Daverage says “At the Precipice is a result of sleepless nights, where tossing and turning can only do so much and you find relief in resigning yourself to the fact that sleep will not come. Having experienced this on many occasions, it is the whiling away of the small hours at night productively that distracts you from over thinking and although mentally exhausted, at least you have reached the new dawn with a sense of achievement.”

‘At the Precipice’ is available to buy, stream, and download across all major platform NOW.

Quinn Sternberg

Duke Ellington famously referred to “cicadas in the tropical night” to illustrate that music is all around us, and cicadas continue to influence what we conceive of as music.

New Orleans based bassist Quinn Sternberg embraces this ‘one mind’ concept with his flowing, ultra-melodic compositions on “Cicada Songs” (released on 4th March 22 on Mind Beach Records) accompanied by musicians who seem to think and act in accordance with unspoken guidelines, playing together with the ease of communication found in that natural insect phenomenon.

Sternberg's ability to comfortably move in and out of different musical styles has secured him a solid place in the hierarchy of New Orleans music, while also maintaining a touring schedule with guitarist Charlie Ballantine and others.

After graduating from the prestigious jazz program at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music where he studied with luminaries like the late David Baker, Quinn found himself at the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Institute, where he immersed himself in round-the-clock jamming and composition studies with jazz great Billy Childs. It was there that things started to gel compositionally, and for Quinn, the Midwest and New Orleans started to groove together.

Throw in a few million insects, and you’ve got some striking music.

Cris Cap

Cris Cap is a German based composer and pianist who specialises in RnB, Jazz fused Pop and Soulful Sounds. He has been working with an array of talented musicians and vocalists to create his easy listening soul pop sound.

With influences ranging from Al Green, Chaka Khan and Steely Dan over to Jordan Rakei, Tom Misch and Vulfpeck, Cris explained how he wants people to consume his music, "With my music I want to give people the positive emotions that are within them. Sometimes those are hidden, but music has the ability to bring them out. Music is unique, it gives us emotions that no other art can produce. It is the art that can also console us very well and help us to get through very difficult moments.”

The song ‘Say Yes’ is about falling in love, and also about deciding, because sometimes when losing one’s head you are in a situation when you have to choose whether to follow your feelings and go all the way - or not and that is not easy to do - especially when you’ve just lost your head. Taking the chance and also the risk of failing can be a real hard decision, because if you eventually don't go for it and don’t commit to love, you could regret it for the rest of your life.

When I fell in love the last time, it was quite difficult for me. I was utterly in love but really uncertain about changing my life totally. I was lost, struggled and fought with myself for some months. Eventually, I managed to decide on a whole new life and set out on a new path. I said YES - and that was the right thing to do and this is what the lyrics of SAY YES are all about.
