musomusofm on the radar playlist #42 - Micah Thunder, Aza Brown, All Societies, Bosola, 1.0.8., Yael Lanciano and more....

It is Saturday 2nd April, I thought I’d give April Fool’s Day a miss as you never know what people will think if I put out 9 cracking new tracks on 1st April, everyone would have thought I was joking but alas not!

I am off to see a band called Alabama 3 this evening, you may know the song ‘Woke Up This Morning’ which was adopted by the writer’s of hit 90s drama The Sopranos as the main theme tune, I’m really looking forward to seeing them live as I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure before.

This playlist is again, very strong, I know that I say that a lot but the calibre of music that I am receiving for the playlists is literally getting better and better every time, it’s amazing what you can produce in a decent studio in half day these days!

If you like what you hear, please take a moment to check out the bios from our featured acts, they can be found below the embedded playlist. If you love the band you’re listening to, click on their social channels and show them some love.

See you on the other side.

Aza Brown

BBC Introducing-featured Chesterfield Singer/Songwriter Aza Brown returns with his first single of 2022 - ‘For Real?’, a swaggering “Suffragette City”-esque stomp that finds Aza in a rallying tirade against the futility of modern living and the Rat Race.

Fresh and revitalised from 2 months in Mexico (filming the videos for this and next single ‘Afterthought’), Aza certainly isn’t mincing his words here, in a scathing critique of the masses’ zombie-like acceptance of their lot, with perhaps his most direct message lyrically, and subtle relevance to current affairs.

Aza draws Influence from a multitude of bands and artists including (but not limited to) The Beatles, The Verve, Talk Talk, Jellyfish, The Doors, The Divine Comedy, Crowded House, Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Soulwax.

From performing twice at the Alexandra Palace in 2018, recording with Arctic Monkeys’ producer Alan Smyth and playing the Rock The Boat Cruise (Festival at Sea) in the same year, Aza’s band - The WonderWhys - supported The Happy Mondays at an electric hometown gig in Chesterfield the next year.

With the enforced lockdown, however, gigs ground to a halt, and Aza chose to record with local producer - Danny Burton (Finley Quaye, John Entwistle, Zak Starkey), who was so impressed with his vocal harmonies that he invited him to sing on his own solo album “Night and Day”.

The album “Exennial” will be available in the Summer of 2022, before at least 2 more singles have been made available.

All Societies

Survivors of two decades on the UK’s glorious toilet circuit. Two unassuming “West Country Mavericks” (thanks to their friends at Venue Magazine for that one) interested only in delivering precision-built idiosyncratic indie belters with pop sensibility, punctuated with chant-friendly melodies.

No trends, no dramas, and even no end destination... All Societies exist to bring a groove, tell a story, and perhaps even raise a smile.

Lost to the Flag is the band's debut album. Recorded at Outhouse home studio and was mixed by Harry Stoneham of BBC 6 Music favourites Waldo’s Gift. It is due for release on 15th April 2022.

Ahead of the album release, check them out on their various social channels below.

Bosola

Bosola are a 3-piece Alternative Rock band from Newcastle Upon Tyne, from a collection of musicians who met in Heaton. Their unique sound references alternative guitar bands of the 80s and 90s and existential lyrics with guitar pop sensibilities and affable wit that will make you want to dance yourself into the abyss.

Their new single ‘Ophelia Headstrong’ was released in March 2022.

Ophelia Headstrong is a lyrical exploration of the conflict experienced in chasing your dreams. Inspired by songwriter's female friends and partner chasing their powerful dreams of academic success but facing misogyny and underhand criticism for being successful and strong-willed. Written from two perspectives, from one of envy and another of support, the song ends on a chorus of celebration of strong willed women.

Musically the song draws on big melodic rock n roll drawing on the big choruses of the Early Manic Street Preachers, Shonen Knife's bubblegum punk sound and a surf rock musical break.

“Being hopeful, fragile and melancholic, Bosola’s songs perfectly depict the current overwhelming emotional picture of the whole nation” – Spotlight Music

“The production is crystalline, serving the intricate melodies and glorious worlds within these songs allowing the EP to shine as a bold, enthralling, fresh and endlessly re-playable statement of intent from an absolute visionary songwriter. Absolute essential listening.” - NARC Magazine
The band have live dates arranged, for more info, head to their social media links below.

1.0.8.

Since 2020 Andrew Stewart has been working with producer and musician Jason Odle, at Developing Sounds, North Yorkshire. ‘DEVOTION’ album follows on from Stewarts previous dream-like soundscapes, sprinkled throughout with observations of contemporary life; the album perhaps giving a nod and a wink to the likes of Talking Heads, The Beatles, through to The Flaming Lips and Labi Siffre.

Several of the tracks from the upcoming album have recently been played on BBC Introducing, and on Tom Robinson’s BBC Radio 6 music show.

Originally from Glasgow, Andrew Stewart lives in North Yorkshire and works on a wide range of visual and music based projects involving established artists and emerging artistic talent. Stewarts first independent recording project began in 2019 under the name ‘Familial’ at Post Electric Studios, Edinburgh, with nephew Calum Stewart (now with Glasgow’s ‘The Ninth Wave’), and with daughter India Stewart – filmmaker.

The album ‘DEVOTION’ is available NOW.

Yael Lanciano

Yael Lanciano is a Phoenix, AZ based singer-songwriter and pianist who has been singing since she was 7 years old, and writing music since she was 15.

After being the lead singer of various rock bands, she decided it was time to go solo. Shortly after that decision, she took a 6 year break from music to pursue another career, but music came calling again, and she started writing again in 2020.

From a young age, Yael was exposed to all different types of music ranging from Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey, to Ella Fitzgerald, and the Beatles yet she has always been a fan of the Top 40 charts. Her latest track

This track ‘Back to Love’ was greatly inspired by ODESZA.

Recorded at her home studio in Los Angeles, the song was inspired by a friend who was going through a difficult time, and her own personal experience of going through the pandemic as a single woman. The song is meant to bring hope and comfort, and serve as a reminder of self love, and that everything is going to be okay. Love is always here.

Shortly after she wrote the song, Yael went through some tough stuff personally, and it was incredible how the song touched her.

Asked for a single sentence that would set the scene for the track, Yael replied, “Love is always here for you, and this song is a reminder of that truth."

Keep up to date with her musical whereabouts at the following sites.
