musomusofm on the radar playlist #48 - Slow.Fall, Emmrose, College Elite, 9 o' Clock Nasty, De Antiquis et Novis, Monroe Moon and more....

Well folks, as we near the magical ‘half century’ mark for our new music playlists, I would take this time to reflect on the 432 acts that we have featured since we started doing them…..but that would take FAR too long so I might as well just cut straight to the chase and tell you all about THIS playlist.

As usual, I didn’t have to dig that far before a barrage of quality tuneage came rumbling my way, so much so, I have enough for a couple more playlists this side of the month.

We had entries in from all over the world and the content is a proper mixed bag, dare I say ‘something for everyone’, I think as long as you love discovering new music, then there really is something for you!

As usual, our feature acts can be found below the embedded playlist, give them a click, a like or a share, if their music moves you, get involved, don’t be afraid to contact the band directly and tell them HOW their music moved you, I’m sure that they’ll be over the moon to hear from you!

See you on the other side.

Slow.Fall

We covered Slow.Fall in #37 of our musomusofm on the radar playlists so I won’t repeat what I added there but as a recap…..

Andrew Galloway is a full-time software developer who is exploring music as a creative outlet from the comfort of his couch.

He counts Nujabes, Flying Lotus, Japanese Breakfast, Kefir, Thom Yorke, Yoko Kanno, Gorillaz, Griffin McElroy, Vangelis & Lisa Simpson amongst influences but admits that nearly all of his music was inspired by his love for Lo-Fi Hip-Hop and particularly by a desire to eventually get a feature on Critical Role's "Mighty Vibes" YouTube playlist! He added that most of what he produces doesn't really fit the Lo-Fi Hip-Hop sound and that It's a ‘work in progress’.

His latest offering ‘Bridge’ is another track from the weird smorgasbord which makes up his forthcoming album.

Asked about the track, Andrew said, “This track is an attempt at making something coherent out of poor keyboard noodling. I am aiming for a jazzy feel with much of this current batch of music, and I hope that this track adequately conveys some of that. I'm still very much figuring this all out, from the playing, composing, production, and mixing, to making the most out of online AI mastering services”.

This track is comprised of the captured MIDI from aimless noodling on a 49-key controller, rearranged into something mildly coherent, plus additional programmed instruments and effects.

This is a slow burning piano led lo-fi piece if art with a jazzy undertone which carries it along smoothly, I for one am excited to see what the album brings.

Asked for his final thoughts, Andrew adds, “I just want to make something worthwhile before the world ends.”

Keep up to date with his musical happenings at the various socials listed below.

Emmrose

New York based singer songwriter Emmrose recently released her first politically-charged single, “Brave New World” on March 18, 2022.

The new single is a cinematic piece inspired by some of the artist’s favourite novels such as George Orwell’s 1984, the 1932 novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and the famous line in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, “O brave new world, that has such people in it!”

Emmrose combines themes from dystopian novels relevant to the madness in our world today, embroiled in war, disinformation, and conspiracy theories.

At the time of writing "Brave New World", the US had just elected the new president amidst a massive disinformation war. Emmrose could not avoid being inspired by hearing friends, the news, and social media swirling all around her with conspiracy theories influenced by politically-motivated disinformation groups.

Emmrose wrote this song on guitar, an instrument she rarely writes with. To heighten the effect of the dystopian theme of the song she envisioned the cinematic approach to the production, created by Mike Abiuso at Behind the Curtains Media. "

She explains, “I was playing around with some chords and doing a little arpeggio, and I just had the verse melody pop into my head. I wrote about one of the books I was reading at the time in one sitting. When I came into the studio - I only had the bones of the song, just the chords, melody, and lyrics. My producer Mike Abuiso created the epic, cinematic sound that is heard in "Brave New World". One of my main influences was the song Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead, I just love the way the guitar sounds in that song. Mike and I frequently use Radiohead as a reference point with production starting points for my recordings."

The first line of the song, “hit the soma when the days feel worn, I feel it keenly” was based on the drug "soma", which is a fictional sedative from the book Brave New World. Emmrose finds the concept of using a mind-numbing drug to forget the problems of the world relevant to how people cope in today's troubled world.

College Elite

College Elite is the lo-fi garage rock project of Joshua William, from Manchester comprising vocals, percussion and a single guitar. Josh draws upon years of inspiration from all types of alternative rock, be it early 90s' grunge or modern indie rock, and strips the music down to its raw and authentic core - the perfect soundtrack for any 2000s’ college dorm

After the release of ‘Next Semester’ (28th January 2022) which saw radio play on BBC Introducing, College Elite released his follow up single ‘I Might Fall Apart’ on Friday 8th April, recorded at Mad Fox Studios with producer Tayte Nickols (Supera Morza, The Sheratons).

‘I Might Fall Apart’ has the ever-present DIY punk and indie music ethos found in College Elite songs, yet has pop rock influences and pop melodies from the Noughties which tie it all together.

Inspired by a relationship not working out, ‘I Might Fall Apart’ is an unrelenting pop punk song with big choruses and catchy lyrics. ‘I Might Fall Apart’ is as honest and real as expected with William's autobiographical lyrics, yet contains the accessible songwriting, anthemic hooks and the authenticity of lo-fi indie rock found through College Elite's back catalogue.

Speaking about ‘I Might Fall Apart’, Joshua William said, "I wanted to do a more fast paced jangly pop style song, going as pop as even Busted. I wrote the song on piano so i could focus first on the lyrics and vocal melodies rather than have in my mind how I was going to play it on guitar. I wanted it to be non-stop for 2 and a half minutes and this is what came out."

This track (and just about everything put out in the past by College Elite) is guaranteed to get the party started and leave you humming and whistling the tune all day long!

9 o’ Clock Nasty

March 2022 saw 9 o’clock Nasty unleash their latest offering ‘PLAYBOY DRIVER’.

If you’ve become accustomed to the 9 o’clock Nasty EPs, prepare yourself for the distilled essence. ‘Playboy Driver’ is one song. There is nothing playful or eclectic about this one. This is a statement of intent. A moment of violence. Garage rock is back, baby.

After politics and sex, the time has arrived for pure speed. After they brought you politics, you will probably agree there has been an abundance of politics ever since. They brought you sex, and they understand everyone is getting plenty. So hit the gas, and live life like you really mean it.

Everyone needs the ‘Playboy Driver’ in their life.

9 o’clock Nasty will return in April with their first out and out dancefloor-orientated EP, entitled ‘HIPS’. It is some freaky shit. You may want to prepare your glitter and dancing pumps.

De Antiquis et Novis

Matthias Schorer looks after the composition, production, engineering, synthesizers whilst Edi Schorer takes care of acoustic and electric guitars.

Recorded at Studiowork in the De Antiquis Et Novis studio in Munich, Germany, ‘I don’t want to run for another day’ are the opening lines of ‘Calm’, a track that encapsulates a feeling everyone has already experienced at least once in their life. If ‘Calm’ is able to make you relax and chill out when listening to it, then it has achieved its intended goal.

Previous reviews have really hit the nail on the head when it comes to describing the sound, "De Antiquis Et Novis creates many memorable moments by offering different timbres of smooth sounding soundwaves. Really, every sound choice is fitting to the soundscape created. "

"The artist draws on his vast array of vintage synthesisers to create a warm electronic tapestry with touches of more modern synths to offer the full spectrum of sound and timbres."

We asked Matthias when he knows that the song is ready to be released, he replied, “When I listen to my mixes and my cats Max and Moritz stop running around and start to chill, then I know that my mix is right…..”
