musomusofm on the radar playlist #7 - Aversions, Evie Lulu, Gedalya, Altan, BE and more....

As the year starts to unfold, we once again find ourselves in that situation where bands and artists are postponing shows owing to that pesky Covid-19 thing, shame as I had a ton of live shows lined up!

So, rather than risk catching the dreaded ‘Rona’, why not sit back and enjoy 30 minutes of brand new music from some of the world’s finest unsigned bands and artists?

I have delved deep and unearthed some proper treasure here that needs to be heard by as many people as possible.

The playlist is below, under that, you’ll see bios from some of the acts appearing on the playlist along with their social media details, if you liked what you heard, head to their sites, drop a few comments, buy some merch but mostly, show them some love!

Enjoy!

BE

BE are Shel Cribben - Vocals and Lyrics & Marc Barnacle - Multi instrumentalist, a musical duo from Essex who create eclectic, electronic music.

They first collaborated around 2015 in a very casual way due to living together at the time. Marc would be working away crafting some electronic tracks for fun really, and it made sense as living with a vocalist to experiment with a collaboration. The beginning of some rough recordings were created however unfortunately, this had to be put on hold due to other musical commitments taking priority at the time. They rekindled this process in 2019, again as a side project to our main musical commitments and their debut release was born from those initial ideas. Their main musical projects ended and this sparked a wealth of material and gave them freedom to explore something they started many years ago.

Bands they love (but don't sound like) include Portishead, The Cure, Radiohead, Caribou, Arcade Fire, Moby, Maribou State, Sault, Arlo Parks, The Smiths, The National & LCD Sound System.

'If You' is their 3rd release since their launch in 2020. The song is about the heartache of loss, the emotions and confusion that linger after something has ended, the defiance of not wanting to let go, and finally the honesty of true reflection & acceptance to move through it all with two fingers in the air… It’s a whole journey of emotions.

ALTAN

ALTAN is a singer-songwriter & producer and he tries to align his heartfelt tone with future R&B and alternative pop the best he can.

During the pandemic he used the spare time to focus more on music projects as an indie artist, so there is plenty more music to come!

"Nevermind" is about dealing with difficult circumstances. He wrote this song at the peak of the pandemic where so many people, including himself, struggled with their life situation not knowing when things will get better. It describes a person who wants to help a loved one out of the unknown but isn't able to do so and finally reaches the point of indifference. "I'd rather hear a note of hope that it's alright but never mind".

He draws influence from some of his favourite acts that include BANKS, SZA and The Weeknd and he goes on to add “Wherever you feel stuck right now, hold on just a little more.” - wise words indeed….

GEDALYA

The Folk-Rock Rabbi tells a personal story with 'If I Were Superman.

Geoffrey Sloshay, better known as Gedalya, the Folk-rock rabbi, is back again with another one of his infectious songs, but this time taking it back to his beginnings in New York in 1991.

With his release, If I Were Superman, Gedalya shares a powerful message that resonates now as much as it did then, but with an impressive array of musicality that transcends the decades, the song has found a new life as challenges across the world bring people to look inward.

"At the time I wrote, If I Were Superman, I was living in a small apartment with my father and was determined to find a way to be a rockstar, no matter what," Gedalya said. "It was the first effort toward achieving my goals, and so carries a special meaning for me, and I am proud to share it once again, all these years later, with the hope that others will find special meaning in it as well."

A more low-key version of the song was released on Gedalya's collection of piano and vocal tracks, but with a fresh take, accompanied by powerful supporting vocals and a more produced sound, If I Were Superman brings that same powerful message to a new audience.

"It’s about dreams,” Gedalya said. “My dreams, the listeners' dreams, our collective dreams, and how they all work in conjunction with each other to create a better world.”

“For thirty years, this song has been in my repertoire,” he said. “And now, with this latest version and release, a whole new generation can experience the message and hopefully better understand their dreams and how to achieve them.”

EVIE LULU

Evie Lulu is a Melbourne based singer songwriter and musician who is currently focusing on advancing her productions skills as well. She has been making music for years, primarily vocals, guitar and piano. Her music taste is heavily inspired by bands and artists such as Silverchair, The Sundays, Kate Bush and Bon Iver, a blend of Pop, Rock and Grunge.

She focuses on transparency in her songwriting, it’s almost like a journal to her and she uses it to self-reflect, whether on personal downfalls, issues in her life or accomplishments.

She started this EP in November 20, almost a year to the date that it was released. It was recorded in her home studio where she worked on it everyday, 24/7. She would then mix it and send it over to her very talented friend and producer Finn McCallum (@djhomeinvader). The 5 songs she chose to make the final cut were the ones she just kept going back to, she wanted to show a range of high energy tracks as well as that complete contrast of some more raw pieces of work.

She has music out on pretty much every platform, all under the name ‘Evie Lulu’ - Apple, iTunes, Triple J Unearthed, Spotify, Soundcloud and was very happy to have been able to put out a music video for her single ‘South Side’ with her amazingly talented friends helping out with the process; Sweeney Crabb (@sweeneycrabbfilms), Daisy ET (@a.girlisa.gun), and Callum Johnson (@neo.cog.ito).

AVERSIONS

"Sharp Left Turns" is the title track off the forthcoming 4-track EP due out Jan 2022.

With the accompanying video being the first to feature the band members themselves, "SLT" is something like a debut for Aversions despite this being their second official EP. With the pandemic scuppering their tour plans in support of their debut EP in 2020, they're hoping that "SLT" and the EP it belongs to represent more of a proper introduction to the world.

With an eastern Canadian tour, festival dates and their first full-length LP on tap for '22, the band are excited to chart the way forward and are all-in on becoming a fixture on the Canadian and international post-punk scene.
