Ahead of embarking on a 19 date tour to celebrate 15 years of the band being together, we catch up with the wonderfully talented Melanie Pain, one of the vocalists of French Bossa Nova covers band NOUVELLE VAGUE to chat about their sightseeing plans in the UK, their favourite songs to perform live, their desire to cover a SMITHS album and receiving feedback from bands on the songs that they have painted with their ‘Bossa Nova’ paintbrush in the past. Read on for all of this and much more!

In order to appeal to both English and French fans (of which there are many) I have translated the interview into both languages.

Melanie, you have performed songs by many great bands over the years including Joy Division, Buzzcocks, Blondie, Depeche Mode and New Order, which are your favourite songs to perform live?

What's crazy about all these songs is that I've been singing them on stage for 20 years and I still have so much fun! My favourite has always been ‘In a manner of speaking’ by Tuxedomoon.

There must be many classic songs out there that you would really like to perform, please tell us a few that are on the list.

I'd love to do a Smiths cover album for example because I've been a big fan of the band since I was 12 years old :) Otherwise as for the classics I do not get tired of Nina Simone and Sam Cooke for the groovy side and the songs of Harry Nilsson for the ultra pop side. 

Do you have to contact the band’s management in order to request that you can perform their song?

As long as we respect the chords and lyrics of the songs, we do not ask the permission of the bands, all the rights generated go directly to the original composers and authors.

Do you ever receive feedback from bands about the songs that you perform? If so, please tell me who has provided feedback to you in the past and for which song?

Yes we have had a lot of feedback over the years, we have crossed paths with Tuxedomoon, Modern English, Mike Jones of the Clash, we have sung with Martin Gore of Depeche Mode, Ian McCulloch of Echo and the Bunnymen, and many others have given us positive feedback on our versions. I think we managed to pay tribute to the original songs in a sincere way, and the bands felt it. 

You’re on tour in the UK at the end of February until the middle of March, which towns or cities are you most excited about visiting?

This tour we have been waiting for 2 years !!! I am very impatient we have 19 concerts all over England, I am really looking forward to returning to Manchester and Scotland for example but frankly for us French, all the cities of England have something mythical !! 

Are you planning on doing any sightseeing whilst on tour? I see you have a few days off between shows.

Unfortunately the tour will be very intense and the days off are used to travel in general but I intend to go to as many pubs as possible!!

We’ll be watching you perform at the Exeter show on March 18th, I’ll have a photographer there so please make sure you give him a smile!

Your music is very popular in the UK, what is it about your music that appeals to so many people?

Our way of doing covers is quite unique, we have a sound of our own and that people recognise, there is also I think our ‘Frenchy ‘accent and our aesthetic on stage. Singing ‘New Wave’ in bossa nova is quite daring and we did not expect this success! 

You perform the songs in English, have you ever considered translating them into French?

We also sometimes sing 80's songs in French or German but when that's the language of the song, we never considered translating the songs because we want to respect the original song.

Lastly, it’s been a few years since you have released a record, do you have any plans to release anything soon? If so, please tell me so I can share the news!

We are talking about something special that might happen in 2024 but I have been sworn to secrecy so you’ll just have to keep your eyes on our social media for more information as it is announced!

Au cours des années vous avez chanté les chansons de grands groupes comme Joy Division, Buzzcocks, Blondie, Dépêche Mode et New Order, quelles sont celles que vous avez préférées faire devant un public?

Ce qui est dingue avec toutes ces chansons c’est que je les chante sur scène depuis 20 ans et j’ai toujours autant de plaisir ! Ma préférée a toujours été ‘In a manner of speaking’ de Tuxedomoon.

Il doit y avoir beaucoup de grands titres que vous aimeriez chanter, pouvez-vous nous en nommer quelques uns?

J’adorerais faire un album de reprises des Smiths par exemple car je suis une grande fan du groupe depuis que j’ai 12 ans :) Sinon pour ce qui est des classiques je ne me lasse pas de Nina Simone et Sam Cooke pour le côté groovy et des chansons de Harry Nilsson pour le côté ultra pop. 

Devez-vous demander l’autorisation aux auteurs avant de pouvoir chanter un titre qui ne vous appartient pas

Dès lors qu’on respecte les accords et les paroles des morceaux, nous ne demandons pas l’autorisation des groupes, tous les droits générés vont directement aux compositeurs et auteurs originaux.  

Les groupes dont vous chantez les chansons commentent-ils vos performances? Si oui, quels groupes l’ont fait et pour quelles chansons?

Oui nous avons eu au fil des années beaucoup de feedback, on a croisé en tournée Tuxedomoon, Modern English, Mike Jones des Clash, on a chanté avec Martin Gore de DepecheMode, Ian McCulloch de Echo and the Bunny men, et beaucoup d’autres nous ont fait des feed-back positifs sur nos versions. Je pense que nous avons réussi à rendre hommage aux morceaux d’origine de manière sincère, et les groupes l’ont senti. 

Vous êtes en tournée au Royaume-Uni de fin février à mi-mars, quelle ville avez-vous le plus hâte de visiter? 

Cette tournée nous l’attendons depuis 2 ans !!! Je suis très impatiente nous avons 18 concerts dans toute l’Angleterre, j’ai vraiment hâte de retourner à Manchester et en Ecosse par exemple mais franchement pour nous, Français, toutes les villes d’Angleterre ont quelque chose de mythique !! 

Avez-vous l’intention de faire du tourisme dans les régions que vous visitez entre les concerts si vous avez du temps libre?

Malheureusement la tournée va être très intense et les jours off servent à voyager en général mais je compte bien aller dans le plus de pubs possible !! 

Nous serons présents lors de votre concert à Exeter le 18 mars et nous aurons un photographe avec nous, un petit sourire nous ferait un grand plaisir!

Notre façon de faire des reprises est assez unique, nous avons un son bien à nous et que les gens reconnaissent, il y a aussi je pense notre accent Frenchy et notre esthétique sur scène. Chanter de la new wave en bossa nova est assez osé et nous ne nous attendions pas à ce succès! 

Vous chantez vos chansons en anglais, avez-vous envisagé de les traduire en français?

Nous chantons aussi parfois des titres des 80’s en français ou allemand mais quand c’est la langue du morceau, nous n’avons jamais envisagé de traduire les morceaux car nous voulons respecter la chanson originale.

Et pour finir, quelques années ont passé depuis votre dernière chanson, avez-vous des projets pour en sortir d’autres bientôt? Ce serait avec plaisir de partager l’évènement!
