Pioneering London producer ZAFLON announces the release of his debut EP 'LDP1' on February 12th....
‘LDP 1’ is a deeper, darker journey into the mind of Zaflon.
Take a walk down by the river or in a wooded area on a winter’s day.
An ambient and sinister downtempo, LDP 1 is the debut EP from south London innovator Zaflon. Two songs featuring Zaflon’s latest collaborator Gilan_Music among the cyclonic sub-bass, abstracted guitars, harmonic piano and crooked percussive breaks.
1. ‘Despite All Odds’ – is a paranoid claustrophobic nocturne with samples of nature intertwined with tortured guitars and moaning synthesisers. “I wanted to open the EP by setting the scene in a dark introspective place. I’d been working on this track for a while and it very much set the tone for the rest of the EP,” says Zaflon. ‘Despite All Odds’ was played by Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC 6Music Recommends.
2. ‘Nightmare Division’ (feat Gilan_Music) – is the first of two tracks featuring Gilan (both the low male vocal and high female vocal are sung by her). “This track uses a lot of samples of river noises that I recorded on the Thames riverbank, including the hull of a big old barge being hit with a stick. There are flies, doors and breaking watermelons in there, too, among plenty of other things. Abstracted guitars and an outro consisting of an old piano and a 909 drum machine play out as a modern nocturne. The river driftwood vibe is a theme that runs throughout LDP 1.”
3. ‘Dear Friend Of Mine’ – “is a tribute to a schoolfriend of mine who died earlier this year. He’s the first guy I was in a band with but he went on to have a troubled life. This song is a tribute to the good times we had while at secondary school learning to play music together. This is the only track on ‘LDP 1’ where I used metallic samples in the beat to bring forward the harshness of reality.”
4. ‘7 Stalkers’ (feat Gilan_Music) – “is the second track featuring Gilan on vocals and the final track on ‘LDP 1’. It’s a culmination of everything I’ve learned during the process of making the EP and was a collaboration based around the concept of 7 Stalkers, 7 sins personified and stalking the self taking the guise of symbolic mythical figures (such as ancient Greek gods) and modern symbols (such as the sin of gluttony being a capitalist message fed to us by the media at large). The song ends with the 7 stalkers closing in on their victim and leaves the story open for the next chapter.”
