The Mothers Ruin in Bristol hosted a charity event featuring Bristol's finest bands....

The Mothers Ruin in Bristol played host to a night of live music, showcasing some of Bristol's brightest upcoming bands in aid of two good causes Macmillan Cancer Support and Winston's Wish, we were there to capture the action....

Everything Else

Everything Else are first up, a quirky pop punk band that have gone through multiple line up changes since I last saw them over a year ago. It seems they may have really found their sound now with a Weezer/Beck-esque Nerdrock take on pop punk.

The yet to be titled ‘New Song’ is a standout as the ever dynamic bass playing takes the lead building into a frantic bass solo conclusion. Closing song ‘Happy’ shares this new sound and I was delighted to find out that both are planned to be on the upcoming EP expected mid June.  This is a band that have put the time in to find who they are and are now carving out a niche for themselves in the always competitive Bristol musical landscape.

Expect big things from Everything Else.

The Proxy Youth

Bristol newest garage punks have a bit of everything Buzzcocks hooks and a Sex Pistols rawness, with ferocious attitude and memorable chorus’ they certainly leave a lasting impression.

The singer Jason's DIY ‘punk is dead’ shirt is beautiful contradiction with one of the rising stars of Bristols formidable punk scene. Only a few shows in they already have a strong set of consistent material highlighted by ‘We Wanted More’ which shows off the singers vocal ability and writing prowess. In a brief interview after their sets explosive finale ‘Broken Britain’, Jason expressed his desire to write “Anthems about socially relevant issues for this generation” The band are currently recording with a hope to release some music later this year and will gigging regularly through the coming months.

Beaver & The Foghorns

Cheltenham Rock n’ Rollers Beaver & The Foghorns have a unique sound somewhat like if Babyshambles had grown up on Southern Rock. The rhythm section is almost mechanical in parts stomping beats underlay intricate guitar parts and anthemic gruff vocals. The passion is palpable and clearly resonates with the now dancing audience.

Closing track ‘See How They Run’ from their upcoming album is a perfect example of the rock n' roll stylings of Beaver & The Foghorns with more than a bit of The Enemy influence. It’s a decisively British take on a traditionally American Garage Rock sound.

ICYMI

Energetic pop punk 4 piece ICYMI (In Case You Missed It) are the concluding act to a great night of live music. A packed room welcomes them and they are treated to a set of up-tempo melodic tunes. The consistent sing-a-longs are testament to both the popularity of the band and the effectiveness of their hooks, seemingly everyone in attendance knows every word. The band are well drilled and while some of the bands earlier in the night showed great potential, ICYMI already feel like the finished product. With a great headline performance here and Bristol still buzzing about the release of their new EP ‘Sweat’ the future is looking very bright for ICYMI.

All in all it’s been a great night of entertainment centred around an eclectic yet cohesive bill of local bands all playing for good causes. Between this show and a handful of other activities from the promoters, over £1,000 was raised, a brilliant effort from all involved.
