The super talented ROSIE LOWE dropped in for a chat ahead of her performance at RADIO 1'S BIG WEEKEND....
Rosie Lowe is a Devon born, London based singer songwriter who produces some of the most amazing music we've ever heard. We found out that she was appearing at Radio 1's Big Weekend and were keen to chat to her about performing in front of a home crowd and how BBC Introducing has assisted her in her rise to the top....
You’re playing the BBC Introducing stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend on Saturday 28th May, how did you feel when you heard?
I’m really excited for this. It’s great to be returning to Radio 1 Big Weekend, the BBC have been so supportive over the last few years so it’s lovely to be asked back…I’ve yet to play my album on home soil so I’m really excited to be playing in Exeter too!
How did it all come about?
I played Radio 1's Big Weekend in Glasgow a few years ago on the BBC Introducing stage. This year they have asked 4 acts to return to the BBC Introducing stage and I was one of them.
How has BBC Introducing helped you as an artist/performer?
BBC Introducing & BBC Introducing Devon have been really supportive to me over the last few years, from having me perform to supporting me on the radio. I feel very lucky to have their ongoing support through this part of my career.
Your music is really beautiful, multi layered and a joy to listen to, how do you even start to approach the songwriting process?
Thank you ♡ For me, songwriting is key to my output as a human and it’s the way I deal with a lot of challenges/struggles in my life, therefore my music is very personal & honest. It differs from song to song but most of the time my writing process starts from a feeling or an emotion and the melody and lyrical content come very quickly from that. I try and record as much as I can using just my voice so I can capture what’s in my head. Once the main structure/narrative of the song is down, I start bringing other elements, instruments and production in.
You’re based in London but come from Devon, did you make the move to the capital because of your career?
I used to come up to London a lot when I was younger and I always knew that I would move here after college, I felt it was necessary for me to grow. As soon as I finished (Exeter) college I moved to London and later applied to do Popular Music Studies at Goldsmiths University. I didn’t have a clear idea that I was going to be an ‘artist’ but I knew I would have a career in music. Goldsmiths gave me the time and space to develop as a musician and a songwriter.
Who are you MOST excited about seeing at the R1BW this year?
Well Craig David is a must! What a dude. I’ve never seen him live so really excited for that.
What advice would you give to an artist or band who is thinking of getting in touch with BBC Introducing?
My advice would be to do your thing, ignore what everyone else is doing and don’t ever compromise your sound to fit in, interesting music never comes out of ‘fitting in’...when you are proud of the music (the only thing that matters) get it out there. BBC Introducing is an amazing platform for new artists.
And finally, please would you give us the name of another BBC Introducing act that everyone should be checking out?
I'm excited to see Alice Jemima play, I’ve known Alice since we were really young so it’s amazing to see her grow in to such a special artist.
