WATCH - LEON ELSE releases video for new single 'BLACK CAR'....
Newly signed What Are We Doing/ Interscope Records artist Leon Else debuts his first music for the label with the premiere of the video for his new single "Black Car" today. Watch it HERE
Edgy and urgent, "Black Car," created in collaboration with producer François Tétaz (Gotye, Kimbra, Architecture in Helsinki), reveals the British singer, songwriter, musician, and dancer's artistic complexity and vast musical palette (among his inspirations: David Bowie, Prince, Queen). Else stars in the video with actress/model Suki Waterhouse (The Divergent Series: Insurgent, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies).
"The song 'Black Car' is about the allure of materialistic things," Else says. "The idea came to me when I was on the way to do a hike at Runyon Canyon in Los Angeles. I was in a brown car and I thought to myself, 'I've got to have a black car, the blackest car you've ever seen.' Because I felt like I was someone in a different car that didn't reflect me, and that people would look at me a certain way. I wanted to have the meanest, blackest car, where people would be like, 'Look at that fucking car.' When you have something really materially great, people want to get to know you. That's what I based 'Black Car' on. 'It's saying, 'I'm someone, step into my black car.'"
Born in Gibraltar and raised in a council estate in the seaside town of Margate, England, Else began writing songs at age 12 and self-recording them on a cassette player in his bedroom. With the little money he'd saved from work, Else put himself through dance classes with aspirations of auditioning for England's top performing-arts academies. Within a few years he'd landed supporting roles in films (2009's Nine), ballet, and musicals, but found himself underwhelmed and decided to quit everything to pursue music. Else's momentum on the music scene reached new heights after signing with First Access Entertainment. Following a succession of song releases online, the backing of Radio 1's BBC Introducing system in the UK, and a host of front row invites from the fashion world, Else was signed to What Are We Doing/ Interscope Records to work on his full-length debut.
