We chat to EMILY CAPELL ahead of this year's MUCKY WEEKENDER FESTIVAL
Ahead of the Mucky Weekender Festival which takes place over the weekend of 9/10th September, we caught up with EMILY CAPELL, a singer songwriter and musician from North West London to chat about being a self-confessed London snob, recording with Dreadzone and of course, her top three festival survival tips! For all of this and more, read on….
What is the STRANGEST/FUNNIEST/WEIRDEST thing you have ever seen at a music festival?
I once saw Alan Carr being sick in to a bag at Glastonbury, that was a bit weird… and he was all on his own just leaning against a fence! That year we camped next to a husband and wife who got out of their tent every morning in full evening wear… as in a three piece suit and ball gown. We were never around to see them go back in the evenings so I don’t know how clean they stayed through out the day!! Also i saw Matt Smith (doctor who) coming out of the toilets at Henley Festival, I wish I’d have made a Dr Poo joke but I didn’t think about it until it was too late!
You’re from North West London, are you looking forward to leaving the ‘smoke’ behind for a couple of days in the countryside?
I am but I really love London. I try super hard not to be a London snob but I know deep down I am one! I’m not super at one with nature. I like to be near a shower, a proper bed and a kettle!
I read that you have recorded with Dreadzone in the past, please tell me how that opportunity came about?
Dreadzone are my favourite people ever. Greg from Dreadzone said I was the Billy Preston of Dreadzone and he also says I’m his favourite ever singer and bestest friend of all time. He said I was the new Beyonce which was really nice of him. Dreadzone and I have the same booking agent and we’re all from west London. Our agent introduced us and I loved their music. We started writing together and Greg realised I was the final piece of the puzzle missing from his life.
Your music references so many bands from the past (Nirvana, Fun Boy Three, Joy Division, Paul Weller), can I assume that these bands/artists formed helped to form your early musical tastes?
Yes 100%! I like to think I have a very wide musical taste, although I will admit some of those people mentioned I only included in songs because their names were a good rhyme! I like everything from The Andrew Sisters to Sister Nancy!
You’re supporting Fun Lovin’ Criminals the night before your show at Mucky Weekender, I hope you’ll be having an early night so you’re fresh faced and ready for the festival?
Don’t you worry about that! I’ll still be bringing all I’ve got to the Mucky Weekender! It was an honour to be included in this years line up so I’ll have my beehive nice and high for guys for sure!!!
Finally, music festivals can be ‘mucky’ affairs, please tell me your top 3 festival survival tips
1. Only do what you think Joe Strummer would have done
2. Put suntan lotion on
3. Never choose watching The Who over The Chemical Brothers… worst decision ever!!!!
