We heard that Naomi Hamilton was performing at Radio 1's Big Weekend at the end of May. We invited her along to have a quick chat with us, read on to find out what she aspired to be as a child, how she felt when she heard that she'd be performing at the R1BW event and who she's MOST looking forward to seeing at the event....

You’re Naomi Hamilton, your musical outlet is ‘Jealous of the Birds’ and you're from Portadown in Northern Ireland ­ Tell us a fascinating fact about you that not many people know....

The first thing I ever aspired to be as a kid was a cowgirl

Your debut EP was released in 2015 and your debut album is out NOW, how did you find the process of recording in a studio?

It was a very relaxed and wholesome experience. From about a week after my nineteenth birthday in May until November 2015, I worked on and off with producer Declan Legge at Big Space Studios. It was my first time in a professional recording studio, but after writing and demoing the songs, I had a pretty clear vision of the direction I wanted to take them. As a producer, Declan was able to take that vision, meld it with his own and then create the sounds that the songs demanded. And this was all while I played guitar cross­legged on the floor and ate crisp sandwiches with a view of lush countryside outside the window. It was a happy time.

You’re playing the BBC Introducing stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend on Saturday 28th May, how did you feel when you heard that were on the bill?

I felt the way it must feel to suddenly step into a Salvador Dali painting

How did it all come about?

Not quite sure, if I’m honest. But I do know there are some good souls rooting for my music. People talk!

How have BBC Introducing helped you as an artist?

BBC Introducing has been beneficial in terms of radio play and boosting overall awareness of the songs. It sets a kind of standard which people immediately identify with and gives them the sense that they’re drinking from a natural water spring of new music

Who are YOU most looking forward to seeing live at R1BW this year?

Tame Impala would be immense. ‘Currents’ is a pure cosmic swirl to listen to

How do you approach the whole songwriting process?

Pretty organically. Almost always in solitude, just me, a notebook and guitar. I strive not to censor or limit myself to any musical or lyrical sensibility, but to somehow distil what it’s like to be a human being at that exact moment. Songs are only as good as their capacity to reveal the listener onto themselves.

What advice would you give to an artist or band who is thinking of getting in touch with BBC Introducing?

If you have true faith in the passion and integrity of your songs, then don’t hesitate. Good things grow from that kind of foundation
