We chatted to the founding member of UK punk band SNUFF about their forthcoming EP.....

It’s not every day you get invited to chat to the founding member of a band that you literally grew up listening to. I fondly recall the day that a good friend of mine bought a copy of their debut album Snuffsaidbutgorblimeyguvstonemeifhedidn'tthrowawobblerchachachachachachachachachachachayou'regoinghomeinacosmicambience (We’ll call it ‘Snuff Said’ for short…) round to my place one evening, I think we must have played it 10 times on repeat, flipping the record over every 20 minutes or so and re-listening to it over and over again for the entire evening! Happy days….

Fast forward 31 years and I receive an email from a PR company telling me that SNUFF were to embark on an 8 date UK tour in May to promote a brand new EP called The Wrath of Froth. I literally dropped whatever I was doing and called him back to confirm that this wasn’t a lie and once I was satisfied that it wasn’t an early April fools prank on yours truly, I arranged to cover the Exeter show and chat to the band ahead of the show and find out all about the new EP that would be released whilst they were touring the country.

This all happened a few weeks before the Corona virus hit the UK and since then, well, everything has changed. The 8 dates were postponed and it didn’t look like we were going to get to see our heroes after all.

Out of the blue, I received an email from their PR Manager asking if I’d be up for a telephone interview with Duncan Redmonds (drums/vocals) as it wasn’t looking like he’d be leaving the house anytime soon and it would be a good opportunity to assault him with a bunch of questions, naturally I agreed and the arrangements were made.

I called Duncan as he was just entering his loft based ‘man cave’ where he escapes from the inane humdrum of day to day life to write songs and reflect on life, we chatted for a good 40 minutes (sorry Duncan….) about, well, just about everything, including;

  • Self isolation meals (I think we’ve all played that game recently)

  • The early days including THAT Peel Session which catapulted them into the heady heights of superstardom

  • Creating musical smoke signals (listen to the interview below, all will become clear)

  • Being a technophobe

  • Searching for the least scary sounding God name (again, take a listen to the interview….)

  • The death of compact discs

  • Inspirations behind a couple of the new EP tracks

  • Psychology around social media

  • New material

  • Possibly replacing Phil Collins on the forthcoming/rescheduled Genesis tour

  • How we survived before social media

  • His love of Northern Soul

  • Duncan’s fave bands that we should be checking out
