The album opens with a mid-tempo goth rocker “Blinded By The Darkness”. It’s a decent opener with a decent riff and vocals sounding surprisingly a little bit like Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden.

Tragedy Vampires are definitely on the goth side of rock and give the impression that they seem to like the mid-tempo songs by following this with “Scream Queen” and “Dead To Me (Catharsis) which is in a similar vein.

The songs aren’t bad but as an opening to an album, it doesn’t really grab me. Things perk up on “Eternity” which seems to move from the format and is an upbeat rocker. Probably the best song on the album and would have been my choice as the first track, to really grab the listener. Perhaps the band felt that it was an “odd” song for them, as it’s a bit different to most of the other stuff on offer here.

Next up is the quirky “Alien Race From Outer Space” which sounds a bit like a cross between early 'B-52s' and 'The Cramps' (as confirmed by our chat with Paddy from the band, which you can read in our 'Introducing' section from May 25th) – the band showing off their humourous side by following the first chorus (chorus lyrics: “Alien Race, Where From? From outer space”) with a mumbled “I mean, where do you think?”

Up next is “Gender Bender” a furious thrash through 3 minutes with possibly some questionably un-pc lyrics but a decent reggae style guitar riff and an insistent keyboard line. “Dark Angel” heads back to more gothy territory before “Annihilation” adds a touch of punk to The Cramps style sound for good measure. “Deutschland Nights” ups the punk quotient with a 2 minute stomp played at breakneck speed. “Stay For The Night” slows the pace a touch bit with very dark lyrics, so no real respite there – still can’t get over how much like Bruce Dickinson the lead singer sounds…….

The album closes with “Divine Insanity” which is Tragedy Vampires version of a ballad with a nice guitar line but it’s all tempered with their usual dark lyrics "I think of us again, as I listen to the rain – As blood runs down the blade, with all the mistakes we made". Very different from the rest of the album and a decent song.

Tragedy Vampires have made a good fist of their first album and have written quite a lot of material for their follow-up already. If you like your music with a hint of goth-rock, this is definitely worth seeking out.
