Following the release of her first solo album 'The Flow', we caught up with Montreal-based indie pop singer Halde to chat about her past band Groenland, influences and her dream collaboration.

Tell us about the meaning of your first solo album 'The Flow'.

The Flow is about slowing down and living at our own rhythm. It's not about chasing anything anymore, but letting go of the old, and allowing the new to come in. I've had to deal with grief and change in the last years of my life, so I needed space to heal and go through those emotions. The album helped with that.

What made you want to become a singer-songwriter?

I don't think it was a conscious decision. For as long as I can remember, I've been making up melodies and little songs. But when I started being into Radiohead, I was definitely more excited about songwriting. I studied jazz singing, and I thought those songs didn't feel personal enough to me. That’s when I realised that I wanted to use my words to Show my perspective.

How would you describe your music to someone who's never heard of you?

I would say that I am making indie pop music, with a soul voice and an electro edge.

How does it feel to make music on your own now? Is there any chance for Groenland to come back?

I don't think Groenland is ever coming back, but who knows ? Everybody likes a good come back haha. I think I feel more authentic doing music on my own, and I learn so much more ! Being signed by a label is definitely not a dream anymore. I've never felt good not knowing where my ressources are really going, and I need the connection with every step of the process of making an album. I don't feel like my health is being sacrificed to keep the status quo. Happier days!

What is your dream collaboration?

Listen !!! Thom Yorke will always be up there on the list. But lately I'm thinking Le Ren or Jade Bird.
