RICHARD THOMPSON - ACOUSTIC CLASSICS - ALBUM REVIEW

September 15, 2014

A few years ago there was programme on the BBC called "Songwriters Circle". Its format was to take three heavyweight singer song writers, sit them in front of a live audience and let them belt out versions of their own favourite songs. Sometimes the three singers joined in together, but on other occasions it would not have been appropriate. One such occasion was when Suzanne Vega and Loudon Wainwright sat in shock and awe as our greatest guitarist the magnificent Richard Thompson played a version of "1952 Vincent Black Lighting".

EMMA TRICCA - RELIC - ALBUM REVIEW

September 15, 2014

Listening to "Relic" by Emma Tricca on a humid summer day seems strangely inappropriate, since this album has the feel of an autumnal treat. The Italian-born, London-based singer-songwriter can be uneasily be located in the folk tradition although some have noted a distant link to Nico. Influence sluices will have a rare old time debating this yet what is not contestable is that "Relic" is a fine album by a maturing talent.

INTRODUCING MANCHESTER BASED 4 PIECE THE WATCHMAKERS

September 15, 2014

Combining the sounds of classic 60’s psychedelia with the likes of The Verve, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Primal Scream - Manchester based 4-piece The Watchmakers have created a unique blend of psychedelic laced rock 'n' roll that has been shrouded in mystery over the last 18 months. Their self-produced demos Before Questions Became and Waves have earned the band much critical praise and airplay from the likes of John Kennedy at XFM and BBC Introducing in Manchester and has led to seasoned music lovers and music industry insiders clamouring for more material.

We met up with the guys to talk dogs, supergroups (and I mean SUPERgroups) and the Fab Four, here's how we got on....

JENNY LEWIS - THE VOYAGER - ALBUM REVIEW

September 15, 2014

Jenny Lewis has infuriated, enchanted, annoyed and charmed in equal measure over an illustrious career. The former Rilo Kiley front woman is always worth checking out. When she gets it right ("More Adventurous" and "Rabbit Fur Coat") she is the top of the premier division. In this new album "Voyager" she has enlisted Ryan Adams in most of the production duties although Beck and her love interest Jonathan Rice are also present.

JOHN MURRY - CALIFORLORNIA - EP REVIEW

September 14, 2014

John Murry's story is one of triumph over considerable adversity. He has been prone to self destruction through a troubled past, heavy substance misuse/consumption and many of the songs on 2012's "The Graceless Age" reflected this inner darkness and turmoil. When it comes to this new EP "Califorlornia" a couple of points need to be made.

SPOON - THEY WANT MY SOUL - ALBUM REVIEW

September 14, 2014

The Texan band "Spoon" have never really troubled the charts in the UK and yet in the States they are premier division.
