Following an incredible set at Boardmasters Festival this year, Australian alt-country / indie-folk three piece SONS OF THE EAST are in Exeter tonight in support of their forthcoming album: ‘Palomar Parade’.
Becoming word of mouth sensations following extensive tours of Europe, the band have now racked up more than 180 million streams on Spotify almost under the radar and continue to impress on record and the live stage.
We caught up with Jack Rollins (vocals/guitar) ahead of the show for a quick game of ‘Finish me Off’…..
I would describe our sound as.... a mix of our favourite bands growing up, blended into a motley mix of harmony and heart-melters. Acoustic guitars, banjos and melodies to make you weep.
When I start writing a song, the first thing I do is… put it into a voicemail so I don’t forget it!
When finishing a song, the part I find trickiest is… definitely trying to name the thing! Easily the hardest part sometimes is boiling down all the emotion of a song into a single title.
The first CD/Record/Download I ever purchased was.... the first CD I ever purchased was the Space Jam movie soundtrack. “Everybody get up it’s time to jam now.”
In the next 12 months, we would like to have achieved… gold status for our debut album Palomar Parade out September 23! Put it in your diaries.
The funniest thing I have ever seen at a music festival is... Ripping my pants middle of the gig. Thousands to see.
The band are influenced by some great bands/artists including... The Eagles, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Fleetwood Mac, The Kinks, Bob Dylan. The list of classics goes on.
I wouldn’t be making the music I am today without… any of those mentioned above. We all grew up on that kind of music from our parents and the love of music was instilled in us.
My earliest musical memory is... dancing and singing to the Space Jam CD in my bedroom.
The best sandwich in the world is... my homemade chickpea sandwich. Unbeatable.
My best party trick is... doing the splits. Unfortunately retired now as my knees are in tatters.
When on tour, I can’t live without... bottle of Tabasco sauce and Vegemite spread from Australia.
The first gig I attended was.... a Spice Girls tribute band. The pageantry was incredible….
The best gig I ever attended was... Arctic Monkeys in Sydney. Serious production!
I know we will have made it when we collaborate with… The Spice Girls tribute act! Or maybe do a little acoustic EP with Jack Johnson.
My gravestone will say.... Once tamed an emu.
We’d like to thank Jack for taking part in our innuendo laced feature, we wish him and the band every success for the couple of remaining live dates on their UK tour and look forward to their debut album which drops on September 23rd, more details below.
