After their two sold out Nina Simone shows last year, Black Voices Quintet return in 2018 to present their homage to an artist considered by many to possess the finest voice in the history of jazz music; Billie Holiday.
Eleanora Fagan, known professionally as Billie Holiday, received four Grammy awards over the course of her glittering thirty year career. Her music had a seminal influence on jazz singing and pop music, and her innovations in singing style and improvisation set the stage for the rapid growth of jazz around the world. She released extensively over the course of her life, on four different major record labels, and a substantial amount of her music has been re-released over the later part of the 20th century.
Nonetheless, her legacy has lived on in the minds and hearts of jazz fans worldwide, and UK ensemble Black Voices Quintet count Holiday among their most significant influences. Drawing inspiration from the black oral tradition, an early music form that is based on the ancient folklores and story telling of Africa, the the a cappella quintet will be presenting their homage to the music of “Lady Day”.
