There’s a particular kind of honesty that sits at the heart of great emo and alternative music. It arrives when artists stop trying to preserve the past and instead begin examining it, picking through memories, relationships and former versions of themselves in search of understanding rather than nostalgia. For Phoenix quartet Commoner, that process fuels their forthcoming debut album Former Self, due for release on 13 November via Pure Noise Records.
Ahead of the album’s arrival, the band have unveiled new single “Passerby”, a track that captures Commoner at their most urgent and emotionally exposed. Built on driving instrumentation and a restless energy, the song explores the lingering weight of words left unsaid. Vocalist Romin Mattison describes it as a deeply personal piece, explaining that the track serves as a message to someone he will never speak to again, allowing him to express thoughts and feelings that remained buried for too long. The result is a song that feels both intimate and universal, speaking to anyone who has ever replayed unfinished conversations in their head.
While Former Self takes its title from reflection and remembrance, Commoner are far from dwelling in the past. Produced by longtime collaborator Zach Tuch, the album examines how people evolve across different stages of life. The record explores not only the changing nature of personal identity, but also the ways in which friends, family and relationships transform over time. It asks difficult questions about growth, distance and acceptance, all while acknowledging that the people we miss most are often versions of those we once knew.
The album marks a significant step forward for the band. Following the release of previous single “Breach”, which Commoner viewed as a bridge between past and present, Former Self arrives as a definitive statement of who they are today. The collection blends youthful energy with emotional maturity, balancing introspective lyricism against expansive alternative and emo soundscapes. Across its ten tracks, the band turn moments of personal reflection into shared experiences, inviting listeners to see fragments of their own lives within the stories being told.
That sense of connection appears to be central to Commoner’s philosophy. Rather than preaching from a distance, the band aim to create songs that feel lived-in and relatable, capturing moments and emotions that belong as much to the listener as they do to the writers themselves. As a debut album, Former Self feels designed not only as a creative milestone but also as a closing chapter, allowing the band to process the experiences that shaped them before moving confidently into whatever comes next.
With Passerby providing another compelling glimpse into the record, Commoner continue to emerge as one of the more thoughtful voices in the modern emo and alternative landscape. If the single is any indication, Former Self promises to be an emotionally resonant debut that embraces change, confronts loss and celebrates the complicated journey of becoming who we are.
Former Self is released via Pure Noise Records on 13 November 2026, with Commoner also heading out on a run of US dates this autumn in support of the album.
