Driven by a crashing rhythmic force and insistent synth-lines 'Stones in the Water's lyric draws you into an almost mythical, shadowy description of nature: mysterious stones in water and tongues that glow in the dark.
"The song is written about a canoeing trip in Canada I went on with my father and brother as a kid," explains Soffie. "My dad would tell me tales of the loon on the lake and how the number of calls it made would be the same as the years you had left to live. Iʼm sure he meant well but I would stay up all night counting and being afraid to die! That loonʼs call put a serious mark on me! (And the sound is scary as hell!). The other parts of the song are mostly images and flickers from that trip."
'Stones in the Water' will be accompanied by a music video created and directed by the Danish animation director William Reynish. Reynish has previously worked on music videos such as When Saints Go Machineʼs 'Iodine' and James Blakeʼs 'Limit to Your Love'.
Lowly's recent debut single Daydreamers picked up several plays on Lauren Laverne's 'Recommended' show and served as an excellent introduction to the band's restless, rousing pop, characterized by Nanna Schannong and Soffie Viemose's lead vocals, typically sung in unison adding to the chorus'y psych vibe.
Hailing from Arhus, Denmark, Lowly only formed at the start of 2014 - although the 5 members had been eyeing each other's talents for some time before finally joining forces. "We all respected and admired each other's music a lot before actually playing together," say the band. "Maybe there was a fear of ruining something already great, but when we finally did it, it turned out that we could make something together we couldn't have done alone. And, relying on that, we've created music totally new to us all. The energy of these songs comes from our rehearsals, not from a lot of postproduction. We want people to be able to feel the inspiration and curiosity on the record. We really hope that comes across."
Lowly is: Nanna Schannong (vocals, guitar) and Soffie Viemose (vocals, laptop), Kasper Staub (synthesizers), Thomas Lund (bass + Moog) and Steffen Lundtoft (drums and percussion).
