DENA SINGLE: ‘FLASHED’ RELEASE DATE: 10TH MARCH ON NORMAL SURROUND

March 10, 2014

‘Her tracks are catchy as hell’ FADER

‘Pop isn’t getting any better than this, believe me’ Disco Naïveté

‘She's so now that she appears to be critiquing the hipster mind-set’ The Guardian

‘Berlin-based singer Denitza Todorova spits tons of attitude, turning 90s pop on its head’ DIY

‘Pitched somewhere between Grimes and a Balkan M.I.A, expect people to be tripping over themselves to name-check DENA any minute now’ Mixmag

‘Flashed’ is latest single to be taken from DENA’s highly anticipated debut album ‘Flash,’ set for release on March 11ththrough Normal Surround/!K7 Records. The Bulgarian born/Berlin based creative serves up another trademark slice of avant-garde pop perfection, co-produced by Jonas Verwijnen and The Whitest Boy Alive’s Erlend Øye, who also plays guitar on the track.

‘In Germany the word ‘Flashed’ has different connotations – young people often use it  to show they are really into something and this is reflected in the upbeat tempo and playful lyrics. I liked the light metaphor and its link to my work with reflective materials which also make up the album artwork’ - DENA

After featuring on both The Whitest Boy Alive records and since moving to Berlin in 2005, DENA has spent time honing her self-composed beats and finding her signature sound, releasing a number of tracks and causing a stir throughout the blogosphere along the way. Elsewhere the album features past singles ‘Thin Rope,’ and ‘Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools,’ previously released by French label Kitsune and Greedhead last year, the latter approaching a million plays on youtube. This was followed by the recent release of ‘Bad Timing,’ a more muted affair about the feeling of constantly missing someone amidst the frantic rhythm of the city - pieced together from a collage of stories and reflected through her own prism of experiences.

The simplicity and directness of her rhymes and self-programmed MPC sounds throughout ‘Flash’ sets DENA apart from her peers, whose lyrics are often saturated with metaphors and nuance. The blend of late 90’s dance and RnB vocals with an added pinch of East European Folklore is certainly trademark DENA and a Flash of brilliance from an unorthodox creative with a love for old school beats.
