Today, retro-futurist pop auteurs IVERSEN share their new album, House Plants, their proudest and most realised work to date.
Immediately, House Plants creates its own idealistic realm of perfect pop; from its soaring, euphoric title track, throughout until the final note. Undoubtedly indebted to the sonic sounds of the 80s, it expresses itself honestly and implores you to enjoy the ride.
“It took less time to write than I thought it would.” Josh explains. Recorded over the last six months, there was worry that the record would be a drawn out affair, but in fact, “Many songs where written like “sneezes,” with the majority of their bones in the DAW within the first hour.”
This immediacy is felt throughout the album and represented in equal measure by bombastic bangers (‘Wake Up,’ ‘Spit’), sensual slow-jams (‘Fantasy,’ ‘Heartbeats’) and rousing ambience (‘House Plants,’ ‘I See You’), House Plants is an infectious collection of soul-baring anthems that marries Josh Iverson’s confessional, expressive songwriting with Jonny Royall’s maximalist production.
Remarking of the lyrical content, “I feel as though each track on this album captures a specific moment of my romantic life. ‘Spit’ is about hookup culture and my experiences outside of a long term relationship,’I See You’ is about the haunting dreams of an ex, and ‘Heartbeats’ is a look at self-doubt within a relationship in contrast to my partner’s honest love. It is, for better or worse, hopelessly romantic as a record. Though not in a specific order, I feel this album could plot out the course of a relationship: with its beginnings, it’s end, and all the fucked up confusion in the middle.”
Recent single, ‘Wake Up,’ encapsulates this unifying vulnerability of pop that permeates the record; the unabashed connection with a lover, set to a soundtrack of funky drums and synthy opulence. The vibrant and energy-fuelled video features the duo, with a verdant backdrop framing a heartfelt performance.
Written and primarily recorded at their respective homes, House Plants is undeniably and proudly a DIY product; an exercise in exposing and nurturing its openness and vulnerability through concept to performance. With live drums from Max Dalton and saxophone brilliance from David Lindsay, the album is as collaborative as it is a product of the duo.
"This is absolute labour of love. Jonny and I haven’t ever worked so closely together from writing through to production and mixing, This album has brought us closer as friends and professional collaborators. I hope you enjoy it.”
