But how did it all come about in the first place? We caught up with Pete Cole who is the mastermind behind the project and asked him some questions….
Please tell me a bit more about Farnborough Groove….
It started 30 years ago in 1991 as a way of 'helping out' some my mates who were in bands who weren't very good at self-promotion. The first 8 volumes were on cassette tape (remember them?) with volume 9 and volume 10 on CD and The Best Of and volumes 12 and 13 on ‘all digital’ platforms. Volumes 1-10 were sold via mail-order and sold in local shops and even via the Farnborough Kebab House!
Are all the bands featured from Farnborough?
When it started most were Farnborough based, along with a few within a few miles radius. In more recent times, it has spread a bit and has included a bit further afield (London/Portsmouth etc).
What is it about Farnborough that creates such a variety of bands?
There is something in the water... bands in the vicinity that have done well include The Jam, The Stranglers, Mega City 4, Inter, Genesis, Reuben, Hundred Reasons & Vex Red
How do you go about compiling the bands and artists?
A lot of nagging/reminding!
How often do you release them?
Erratically best describes it really, the longest gap was between volume 10 and volume 11 which was 14 years!
