This Saturday, April 12th, marks the return of Record Store Day, a global celebration of independent record shops and the vinyl culture that has captivated music lovers for decades. Since its inception in 2008, Record Store Day has grown into a phenomenon that unites artists, fans, and record stores worldwide. It’s a day to honor the unique role these stores play in their communities, offering exclusive releases, live performances, and a chance to connect with fellow music enthusiasts.
Record Store Day was born out of a brainstorming session among independent record store owners in Baltimore, USA, in 2007. The first event took place in April 2008, with Metallica launching the celebration at Rasputin Music in California. Over the years, the event has expanded internationally, with hundreds of artists participating through special appearances, performances, and exclusive vinyl releases. The day has played a significant role in the resurgence of vinyl, with sales reaching new heights year after year.
The 2025 lineup is nothing short of spectacular, featuring limited-edition releases from artists across genres. Highlights include Sam Fender’s exclusive EP, MJ Lenderman’s live album, and a reissue of Pharoah Sanders’ Izipho Zam (My Gifts). Fans can also look forward to unique pressings from A Tribe Called Quest, Blur, and Alison Moyet, among others4. With over 260 record stores participating across the UK, there’s bound to be something for everyone.
In Newton Abbot, Phoenix Sounds is gearing up for an unforgettable Record Store Day experience. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and eclectic vinyl selection, the shop will be serving tea, coffee, and hot bacon rolls to the dedicated fans queuing from midnight on Friday. It’s the perfect way to fuel up before diving into the crates for those coveted releases. They’ll also have live performers and a DJ to see you through the day.
Are you planning to visit your local record shop this Saturday? What’s on your ‘wants’ list? Whether you’re hunting for a rare gem or simply soaking in the community vibes, Record Store Day is a chance to celebrate the magic of music and the stores that keep it alive.
