Foals’ critically adored ‘Life Is Yours’ established an exuberant party-starting new twist on the band’s sound. It ignited scintillating summer festival highlights including headline sets at Glastonbury’s Other Stage and Latitude, and saw them sell more than 40,000 tickets over the course of five London headline shows. Now Foals unlock another dimension to the album as they announce that a new dub edition, ‘Life Is Dub’, will be released on April 22nd as part of this year’s Record Store Day celebrations.
As documented by the ‘Collective Reworks’ series, Foals’ music has always been a very natural fit for remixes from some of the world’s most heralded artists from the worlds of electro, techno and house. But with ‘Life Is Yours’ stepping boldly into that territory, Foals have instead taken an enthralling new approach to reimagining the album, with one of the original album’s key producers, Dan Carey, loaded up the masters on the desk and creating a series of live dubs.
Dan Carey says, “’Life Is Dub’ was a lot of fun to make. I approached each track one-by-one, finishing each before moving on to the next so I could feel how the record was developing. For each song, I first decided whether to drop the tempo to half-time or keep the original. I was keen to have a mixture of dubby sounding stuff and experimental bangers, so I tried to alternate between the two. Sometimes I would have a drop of mushroom oil so see how that affected things.”
For the half-time songs, Carey would start by playing a new drum track and live bass guitar with extreme EQ settings to maximum their deep bass dub sound. For the up-tempo tracks, his first step would be to program a new beat around the original kick and snare drums.
From the pulsating, heavyweight bass rhythm of ‘2am’ to an expansive and ever-evolving rework of ‘Wild Green’, Carey cast the album in an entirely new light. The result, ‘Life Is Dub’, is both a technical triumph and a project completely different from anything Foals have previously released.
The limited edition ‘Life Is Dub’ will be pressed on gold 12” vinyl, and the beautifully designed package will feature gold pantone artwork and lettering on a black backdrop. News of ‘Life Is Dub’ follows last week’s release of ‘Life Is Yours (London Contemporary Orchestra Session)’.
Foals’ touring plans for 2023 commence in May with a long sold-out tour of intimate shows hosted by some of the UK’s most loved independent record stores. They then spend much of July touring arenas across North America as special guests to Paramore, before returning to Europe for select summer festivals which include headline sets at the Reading and Leeds Festivals.
