Cork-based Modern Folk Trio, The Lost Gecko are back with another powerful, emotive and socially historic single ‘Brothers’. A song that takes the story of the Choctaw Native American tribe which raised $170 for the plight of the Irish during the famine, even though the U.S.A. was in the grip of its own poverty struggle.
Firstly, who are The Lost Gecko?
I like to think that The Lost Gecko is more of a feeling that souls get when they listen to us. That they are transported away for a time and we are carrying them along with the soundscape.
In real life though , we are a Scottish/Irish trio from Cork, Ireland!
What’s the music scene like where you’re based?
The music scene in Cork is the reason I stayed in 2007. My first week in Cork I was sat round a big table with about 15 musicians and everyone was playing together, a momentous occasion for me. It was and is so inclusive and the pub was jammed!
Your song ‘Brothers’ is such an impactful track, you have played it live for about 4 years now and each time is slightly different. Which rendition would you say is the best one you’ve created, is it the one you released as the single now or another one?
The most powerful rending Brothers we think is the one we recorded for release.
It was done at the kitchen table, with no distractions and we know the song so well that it took no time at all.
It's all us playing and singing. And during this time it was one of the first songs we are releasing that we didn't go to the studio to record so it definitely feels different.
Working as a trio I can imagine must be very fun and motivational at times and you help push each other to new heights. Can you explain how the writing and producing process works for 3 people when I can imagine you all have different personal styles?
I guess I've (Malcolm) been the songwriter from 2006 so it naturally continued. The lads are totally happy with that situation and the music they bring to my songs are pretty incredible. Elaine has written some gorgeous Cello pieces along the way too so myself and herself write. During this time though, I'm definitely finding it harder to write, I've no idea why.
You have such a unique style which is not something we hear very often in music, what has inspired each of you to pursue music?
I wouldn't say I've actually pursued music in any way, I've always just done it. When you go in and record, naturally you want to release the music I think so it developed from there and now we know a lot more about it than we did!
Elaine- I played Cello from the age of 12 and have been teaching music for 10 years in Cork. I also am part of the fleischmann orchestra here in Cork so I'm always and have always been part of music here. Meeting Malcolm 5 years ago has added a new dimension to my playing and sound which I hope comes through in our songs.
John - I actually stopped playing drums for around 20 years and only got back into it a few years back and not long after, Malcolm and Elaine were playing the same charity gig as my own band and asked me to fall in with them for a few songs, and there you have it!
'Brothers' is out this June 30th, and is the first single from The Lost Gecko's upcoming EP 'Scatterbox'. PRE-SAVE 'Brothers' here: http://smarturl.it/9lotfh
