Hamish Hawk faces himself on ambitious new album Intriguer / Tenderness - Out April 2nd

October 4, 2026

Few contemporary songwriters possess the linguistic dexterity, emotional candour and theatrical presence of Edinburgh's Hamish Hawk. Since emerging as one of Britain's most compelling lyrical voices, Hawk has built a reputation for turning introspection into art, balancing literate storytelling with post-punk energy and sharp social observation. Now, with the announcement of his forthcoming album Intriguer / Tenderness, due for release on 2 April via SO Recordings, Hawk appears ready to venture deeper than ever into the darker corners of his own psyche.

Following the critical acclaim of 2024's A Firmer Hand, which earned widespread praise for its unapologetically queer themes and emotional honesty, Hamish Hawk returns with a record that pushes even further into themes of identity, vulnerability and self-confrontation.

Intriguer / Tenderness is structured around two opposing characters inhabiting the same emotional landscape. The Intriguer is charismatic, commanding and reckless, thriving on attention and self-invention. Tenderness, by contrast, is fragile, uncertain and wounded. Across ten songs, Hawk explores the uneasy relationship between these competing forces, creating an album that examines lust, ambition, power, manipulation, guilt and emotional survival.

To introduce listeners to these contrasting identities, Hawk has unveiled two new tracks. Ice-like Empty embodies the swaggering confidence of the Intriguer, driven by a relentless punk-funk groove and steeped in arrogance, seduction and bravado. Meanwhile, the title track Intriguer / Tenderness exposes the emotional fallout left in the wake of that confidence, delivering a synth-driven meditation on pain, obsession and psychological exhaustion.

The dual release offers an immediate glimpse into the record's central conflict. One song projects strength and control; the other documents the damage that such posturing can leave behind.

Yet beneath the conceptual framework lies something far more personal.

Hawk has spoken openly about how the two personas emerged from his experience as a performer, reflecting the tension between life on stage and life away from the spotlight. The larger-than-life figure that audiences encounter each night often stands in stark contrast to the private individual behind the songs. That divide forms the emotional bedrock of Intriguer / Tenderness, an album that examines what happens when performance and reality begin to blur.

Where A Firmer Hand often revelled in desire and confidence, its successor appears considerably less comfortable in its own skin. Hawk describes confronting the often brutal nature of his internal dialogue throughout the writing process, transforming self-criticism, anxiety and emotional turmoil into some of the most direct and revealing lyrics of his career.

That sense of psychological unease permeates the album. References to snakes and infants recur throughout the record, serving as symbolic representations of corruption and innocence, temptation and vulnerability. Songs reportedly written during periods of intense personal struggle lend the album a palpable emotional weight, with moments that feel less like performance and more like confession.

What remains most striking, however, is Hawk's continued commitment to language as a vehicle for truth. Despite frequently being labelled a "literary" songwriter, Hawk insists his focus has always been clarity rather than complexity for its own sake. His influences reach beyond music into literature, television, overheard conversations and vivid dream imagery, resulting in songs that feel simultaneously intelligent and immediate.

It is this unique relationship with language that has helped establish Hawk as one of the UK's most distinctive songwriters. His lyrics never feel ornamental. Instead, they cut directly to the heart of uncomfortable emotions, exposing flaws, contradictions and vulnerabilities with remarkable precision.

If Intriguer / Tenderness sounds like a difficult listen at times, that's because it appears intended to be. This is a record built around conflict, not comfort. It places the artist opposite himself and allows the listener to witness the fallout. The result promises to be both unsettling and deeply human.

As the release date approaches, Hawk seems aware that he has created perhaps his most emotionally demanding work yet. Whether Intriguer / Tenderness ultimately serves as exorcism, self-discovery or reckoning remains to be seen. What is already clear is that Hamish Hawk continues to evolve as an artist unwilling to take the easy route, choosing instead to confront difficult truths with intelligence, wit and brutal honesty.

With Intriguer / Tenderness, Hamish Hawk appears poised to deliver another bold chapter in an increasingly impressive catalogue. By turning the spotlight inward and exploring the fractured relationship between ego and vulnerability, he has crafted a work that promises to be as challenging as it is captivating. If the newly released tracks are any indication, listeners can expect an album that is dark, provocative, deeply personal and impossible to ignore.
