‘Hear Her Voice' is a brand new 21 track compilation spotlighting some of the most influential female artists from 1968 to the present day. Chosen from the Universal Music UK catalogue the tracks come from records highlighted as part of this year’s National Album Day with its theme of celebrating women in music.
Released on 16 October on LP (yellow artwork exclusively from HMV), CD (red artwork) and on all digital platforms, this newly-compiled collection features innovators, pioneers and interpreters, artists who pushed against the glass ceiling and blazed their own trail – from performers like Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield and Marianne Faithfull who battled against stereotype to singular vocalists and writers such as Siouxsie Sioux and Kirsty MacColl to today’s accomplished stars the calibre of Emili Sandé and Florence Welch.
'Hear Her Voice' includes the soulful magic of six-time Grammy® winner Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back To Black’, Robyn’s iconic ‘Dancing On My Own’, Corinne Bailey Rae’s joyous celebration of music and empowerment, ‘Put Your Records On’ and ‘Don’t Call Me Up’ by 2019 Brit Award Female Vocalist winning Mabel.
'Hear Her Voice' features many different styles and genres and its unity comes from the power of delivery throughout – whether it be trip-hop pioneers Portishead (with Beth Gibbons), the jazz influences of Celeste (Recently Mercury-nominated and the first UK female artist to have a No. 1 album in five years), the post-punk vigour of The Slits, the street smarts of Neneh Cherry or the effervescent dance-pop of Ellie Goulding.
'Hear Her Voice' was compiled by Lisa Power, founder of reissuesbywomen.com. “The breadth of female talent in the Universal Music UK catalogue is immense,” says Power. “And it is not overstating it to say that we were blown away by the overwhelmingly positive responses to be part of this collection, which showcases songs from some of the most critically acclaimed and enduringly successful albums by iconic women across six decades of music history.”
Completing this unique collection there are tracks by Jessie Ware, Sigrid, Ms. Dynamite, Gabrielle and Imelda May.
The LP version of the record has been produced exclusively for HMV, who will also support the release through a series of vinyl and CD bundles that will include the records of the women who appear on the compilation as well as specially made tote bags. The campaign will be front and centre of HMV’s Nation Album Day celebrations with displays in their store windows throughout the country.
'Hear Her Voice' is available in physical formats and all DSPs from 16th October 2021
