Ahead of RATTLERFEST which takes place from 19-20 April at HEALEYS CYDER FARM in Penhallow (nr Truro), we wanted to chat to bands and artists performing at the festival so YOU can plan your weekend. Next up is LEE QUINNEY who will be taking to the stage as the Rocketman himself ELTON JOHN to entertain you all….
Please describe your act/band and tell us a fascinating fact that not many people would know...
I am Lee Quinney and I’ll be performing the classic songs of Elton John. It all started for me when I watched the movie ‘Rocketman’. I’ve always enjoyed Elton John’s music but the movie really struck a chord with me literally! I started to study Elton’s playing, mannerisms and vocal characteristics and soon enough things started to take shape. It was a challenge as Elton is a very accomplished pianist and has a very unique playing style. My first gig was just me with a huge red piano that was purchased from the set of Rocketman the movie (true) back in 2019. After a few years performing as Elton John all over the UK, I wanted to take it to the next level with a live band, and luckily for me I knew just the guys! I’ve been the front man for a band called Qwest since 2014, and after seeing the success of my Elton John solo show, they wanted in. It’s great to have the live band on stage and bounce energy off each other. It’s now become the full Elton John ‘in concert’ experience, with costumes to match!
When did your relationship with Rattlerfest start?
My first experience was playing a solo show three years ago. I was booked for a Sunday afternoon and when I arrived, everyone looked partied out. I was unsure if it would work, playing to this kind of crowd but walking out on the Rattler stage for the first time is something I’ll never forget. The atmosphere was electric and I stepped up a gear, into full ‘Elton’ mode. Since that first Sunday afternoon gig, the following year with the live band on the Saturday afternoon, then this year I’m playing on Friday evening. I feel that I’ve grown with the festival. Bring it on!
Have you played Rattlerfest before? If so, when and if not, what are you looking forward to the most?
Yep, it’s the third year for me now and it’s always that first song when the crowd sing back to you. It’s great to see and hear all the different age groups still enjoying Elton’s timeless music.
What was your reaction when you knew you would be playing there this year?
It’s a great feeling to get the invite. As we approach the date, we are hard at it rehearsing like crazy. We like to change things up a bit, so even if you’ve seen us before, there’s always something new to bring to the show.
From the bands announced so far, who are you looking forward to seeing and who would you hope may yet make it onto the bill?
It’s a great line up this year. I love a bit of nostalgia so for me, East 17 is going to be epic I’m sure. It would be great to get a George Michael Tribute there one year so we can do a (Don’t let the sun go down on me) duet.
There is a Rattler Shop onsite, will you be paying a visit for some takeaway produce?
Probably a huge Rattler sponsored hangover!
Are you planning on a pasty, ice cream, cream tea whilst in Cornwall?
We are all based in Cornwall so the band runs on pasties!
Finally, why should a festival punter make an effort to see you guys at Rattlerfest this year?
Even if you’re not an Elton John fan, we bring the party and the drama! We love to see everyone who have come along to see us and made the effort, dressing up as well as with the trademark glasses, feather boas, glitter & sparkle, the lot! Let’s have the ultimate sing along, see you on Friday night.
