Introducing Alex Tyrrell who is a composer from London. He makes music with improvisational techniques, he performs in surround sound, he blindfold's people.
We caught up with Alex in a takeaway in Shoreditch after a night of snorting wasabi and lemon juice, while he was waiting for his shish kebab with extra garlic sauce, we pinned him down and asked him some questions, here's how it went….
Name of band / act? Alex Tyrrell
Location? London
Names of all members? Alex Tyrrell with help from friends.
When did you form? Shortly before birth in 1989.
Introduce yourself and your music in one sentence…. I wish it sounded the way a Turner painting looks.
A fascinating fact about you or one of the band members? I’m wearing only one item of clothing.
Last time you used public transport and where did you go? Yesterday, Piccadilly Line. I went home.
Last time you felt proud? It’s difficult to distinguish between pride and vanity.
What classic song do you wish you recorded and why? What constitutes a classic song? Umm, Pete Seeger - Little Boxes.! !
Last movie you saw? Gravity. Not completely underwhelming, but without the impact of “2001: A Space Odyssey”.! !
Last book you read? “Give My Regards to Eighth Street” - Collected writings of Morton Feldman.! !
What did you dream about last night? Don’t get me started. My dreams are always furnished with substance that reflects my daily experiences, with overtly obvious unconscious themes that are themselves rigorously analysed within the dream context: only to reveal slightly less obvious dream symbols. I try to forget the whole thing.
Last time you cried? Even when I cry, tears don’t come out. I have questionable tear ducts. So crying is really not distinguished from laughing for me.
Last time you were rude to someone and why? I told a guy to stand back at a cash point yesterday because his face was basically touching my neck.
What excites you? Tapas. That’s Tapas, not tapes!
Biggest musical influence? BRIAN ENO.! !
Earliest childhood memory? Being obsessed with the automatic clock on the telephone line. You call it up and it says (said) “The time sponsored by Accurist is …”
Best gig you ever played? I did a private showcase in December. The audience were blindfolded and subjected to a combination of surround sound and musicians roaming around them while playing. Musical performances are generally so standardised and boring. I refuse to waste my time with that stuff.
Best band/artist of 2013? Fyfe! !
Biggest act you have ever played with (supported or on the same bill as)? No!
The last album/record you bought? Something from the label Erased Tapes.
Last time you had a fight? Every day is a struggle.
Tell me one of your guilty pleasures? Gossip Girl.
Best advice you ever received and who was it from? Commit to your own uniqueness. Morton Feldman (not direct advice!).
Largest amount spent in a single purchase? (excluding property) Probably Rickenbacker guitar. Money well spent.
It appeared that whilst we were deep in conversation, a drunk came along and stole Alex's kebab, I dug deep as I felt responsible for the event, while Stavros was sorting out another for him, we rolled in the quick fire questions….
Coffee or Tea? Tea
Coke or Pepsi? Either
Mac or PC? Mac
Holidays/Vacations – Beach or ski-ing? Neither
Meat or Vegetables? Vegetables
CD or Vinyl? Cassette
Car or Motorbike? Feet
Cat or Dog? CAT!!!!!!!
Acoustic or Electric? Electric
Angelina or Jennifer? Both (hmmm, likewise - MM)
Cooked Breakfast (bacon/eggs/mushrooms/toast etc) or Cereal? Cereal
