Morgan is a mysterious 22 year old singer-songwriter from Paris, France. We know very little about him aside from a fun and promising single titled “Honey Honey”, and that he is as surprising in his declared influences as he is prolific in his musical output, despite having no formal training
We caught up with Morgan and asked him some questions about singing dogs, embarrasing records and God, here's how we got on....
Please introduce yourself your music in one sentence....
Dreams & nightmares filled with pop music, transposed into reality
You have cited Ke$ha and Kate Bush as influences, what is it about them that influenced
you?
They just move me. Both are truly inspiring. When I’m making music I hope to have the same effect on my listeners as they had on me: melodies that become the anthem of someone’s long lonely nights, seeing things nobody can see… They’re really cool.
‘Honey Honey' is your first single released from your upcoming EP, how does this make you feel and how would you describe the single?
I can’t tell you how I feel because I’m not sure I’m not dreaming. I think it’s a fun song, a catchy little pop track. Yellow, but cold.
How has social media aided your music?
It has changed everything. My music went from my bedroom to thousands of folks. I’m so glad it exists, because through it I have contact with both music makers and music lovers.
How and when did you decide that you wanted to be a performer?
I’ve secretly dreamt of being a performer since I was 7, when I heard “The Riddle” by Nik Kershaw. But work actually began on my music 3 years ago.
What is the best advice you ever received and who was it from?
Every piece of good advice is worth taking. Actually, recently a strange man named Jesus posted a Vine of himself dancing on “Cruel World” by Lana Del Rey, captioned “If you are always trying to be normal you will never know how amazing you are”. I loved that.
Would you rather live with a dog that sings lullabies or a gorilla that can do sign language?
“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than it loves itself.” True story. And if it also sings, it’s way better than a gorilla.
In your opinion, what is the BEST album/record ever released?
My music culture is really pop and mostly recent. I’m always discovering more music and will probably answer differently in a few months. But for today, the award goes to “The Dreaming” by Kate Bush with Goldfrapp’s “Seventh Tree” a close second.
If you had a chance to put together your own ‘super group’, who would be in it? (Only living members please)
A girl group with Alison Goldfrapp & Annie Lennox singing together, backed by Giorgio Moroder
Do you own a record that you wouldn’t like to admit you have?
I love every record I possess.
What word would you love to be able to say in French?
Je peux tout dire, sauf « I love you ».
First gig you ever went to?
I’m not sure but I think it was Avril Lavigne.
You have a bachelors degree in hospitality and tourism, what advice would you offer to anyone who is studying for a degree and planning to invade the musical world?
My advice: Work hard, and don’t forget to be lazy.
Where did you record your debut EP what made you choose that studio?
I did not choose the studio, the studio chose me, and I’m glad it did. As they say on Tumblr: “I CAN’T EVEN!”
Name three people (alive, dead or fictional) that you would like as party guests and why?
David Lynch, because I want Twin Peaks back.
Ke$ha, because I want her to sing for the guests her Flaming Lips collaboration song “You
Control My Heart” that never got released.
The last one would be Simba, because no party is complete without a talking lion.
There are many good bands and musicians out there, who would you ask the readers of musicmuso to look out for?
The German band Hundreds and their glorious single “Our Past”
If you could describe your music in the form of a fictional character, who would it be?
A 30-year old Laura Palmer & Nobuo Uematsu have a baby named Morgan. And Morgan’s baby sitter would be Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Do you think we can ever live in a world where a chicken can cross the road without having its motives questioned?
If we keep asking too many questions, chickens will get hurt.
What are your plans for the remainder of 2014?
My new single “Scab & Plaster” (Marina & the Diamonds Cover)
My first EP, out in the fall. My first shows.
White wine & melodies.
