Jah Wobble & Tian Qiyi release Strawberry Fields Forever — A psychedelic family love‑letter to Liverpool

July 23, 2026

If you’ve followed Jah Wobble’s journey — from PiL’s seismic early days to decades of dub‑soaked adventures — you’ll know he’s never been afraid to pull music apart and rebuild it in his own image. But his new project with his sons, Tian Qiyi, might be his most personal yet.

Their new single, Strawberry Fields Forever, is out now, and it’s the first taste of the upcoming album Mystic Liverpool: The Beatles Psychedelic Psongbook, landing 14 August.

Wobble has always said Strawberry Fields Forever was the song that changed his life as a kid in the East End. So hearing him revisit it now, with his sons and their mum, feels genuinely special.

This version is hypnotic, dreamy and beautifully strange. Charlie’s erhu and morin khuur give the melody a haunting, nostalgic pull, while John T’s drums and yangqin add shimmering detail. Zi Lan Liao — their mum, and one of the world’s most respected guzheng players — layers in gorgeous textures that feel like sunlight through stained glass.

And then there’s Wobble’s bass: deep, dubby, patient. The whole thing breathes.

“We didn’t try to compete with the original,” Wobble says. “We just honoured the mystery of it.”

That’s exactly how it feels.

Tian Qiyi have been quietly building a reputation for blending British, Chinese and Mongolian traditions with dub and post‑punk energy. Their sound is bold, spiritual and totally their own.

On Mystic Liverpool, that fusion becomes the lens through which they explore The Beatles’ psychedelic era — not as nostalgia, but as genuinely mystical music. It’s Liverpool meets Guangzhou meets the future.

And the Liverpool connection runs deep: Zi Lan’s father founded the Pagoda Chinese Youth Orchestra, where both boys grew up playing from the age of three. The album is dedicated to him — a lifelong Beatles fan who owned everything on vinyl.
