Jamie Yost is an alternative folk, singer-songwriter, based in the southwest. His sound has been compared to artists such as Noah Gundersen, Matt Corby and Daughter.
We first saw Jamie perform at Glas-Denbury Festival in 2017 on the BBC Introducing stage, since then, I moved to London and kind of lost touch with the local live music scene. I saw that he is supporting Wye Oak at The Phoenix in Exeter on 18th August and thought it would be an opportune time to get in touch for a quick chat, here's how we got on....
It’s been a while since we last saw you play live (I think it was at Glas-Denbury 2017) what have you been up to since then?
Since then I've spent a lot of time writing, in the studio and changing the live set up.
You released your debut EP ‘Aurora’ in April 2018, where did you record the EP and who produced it?
We recorded it down PMC Music Studios with Doc Collins. He's a great guy. We all kind of took the role of producer at times but Doc did a great job.
You work a lot with Matthew Gordon Price (another excellent musician), has he become a permanent member of your band now?
Matt’s been a good friend for a while, he helps out a lot and is a permanent fixture in the band set up!
You live in Plymouth, would you say the ‘scene’ is conducive for a singer songwriter of your ilk?
I think it can be quite challenging here for a singer songwriter. But thats okay, a challenge is good. Ive been trying to gig in Plymouth less these days.
You’re supporting Wye Oak in August at The Phoenix in Exeter, how did the gig come about?
We just shot an email over to the Phoenix about support slots.
Were you already a fan of Wye Oak?
I'd never heard of them before but I'm definitely a fan now.
If you could cover any one of their songs, which would it be and why?
Civilian has a cool vibe.
Your sound has been likened to that of Ben Howard, being a local lad, have you ever met him to chat about music?
No! I feel like that might be a strange experience.....he's definitely a hero of mine for sure.
If you could perform with any band or artist (dead or alive), who would it be and why?
Dead or alive is tough. But Bon Iver and Jimi Hendrix spring to mind.
There are tons of musicians and bands out there, please tell me three acts that people should be checking out
People should be checking out Dermot Kennedy, Noah Gundersen and A Blaze Of Feather
So, with your debut EP available now, are you working on an album? If so, when can we expect to hear it?
I’ve been toying with the idea of an album but I think I'm just going to record and see what happens. There’s already a few new ones finished. I think I might do another EP and save a few tracks for an album.
Lastly, tell us your best joke…. (please keep it clean!)
Oh I'm terrible with jokes. I don't have any to draw upon. Maybe that can be the joke?
We'd like to thank Jamie for sparing his time on a Sunday afternoon to chat to us and we wish him all the very best for the future. Tickets to the Wye Oak show at Exeter Phoenix can be purchased HERE
