LISTEN/WATCH/NEWS: THE SOAPGIRLS reflect on the success of their grunge anthem 'Breathe' ahead of US tour....
“The Soapgirls grace stages all over the world with insane outfits, catchy tunes, and a “We don’t give a f**k” attitude to anyone that tries to stand in their way. This is the very ethos of grunge, staying true to what you believe in and not giving a f**k about what anyone else thinks of you” - Raw Music
About The Video
Whilst touring the world for 6 - 8 months out of each year, The Soapgirls somehow find time to expand their ever-evolving discography each step along the way. ‘Breathe’, released back in 2022, with an accompanying video has become one of their most successful tracks to date. Drawing on their eclectic influences, including Janes Addiction, A Perfect Circle, and Blondie, ‘Breathe’ is a masterclass in their unique brand of grunge.
Whilst rooted in the rock genre, with thick guitar layers and pounding drums, The Soapgirls interweave pop-infused melodies and light harmonies into the mix. The Soapgirls’ vocals swim effortlessly between intimate and soft to raw growls and a commanding powerful performance prowess, conveying the swaying emotion of the single. Thematically, ‘Breathe’ is rooted in the power of the present. Whilst not allowing the past to be a cage in which they keep themselves contained, The Soapgirls have penned a rock anthem sharing the importance of remaining present, allowing the future to unfold. Whilst always writing their lyrics from their hearts, the accompanying music video followed suit. Speaking on the creation of the video, The Soapgirls share, “We always follow our hearts in our work. Whether we are writing a song or filming a music video, everything is done in the moment. We don’t try to analyse or pre-empt our creative process. We filmed the video during lockdown, and we wanted to express a message to everyone that although sometimes you may not feel it, you are in control of your own life. We wanted the music video to embody letting go. Just breathe.”
About The Soapgirls
The Soapgirls, made up of sisters Camille (Bass, Vocals) and Noémie Debray (Guitar, Vocals) have earned their reputation as the nicest and most hardworking act on the scene right now. Having always been socially conscious, largely due to their own life experiences, the duo are acutely aware of the need to care for the less fortunate. Whilst busking on the streets of Cape Town, The Soapgirls’ bold performance style and provocative lyrics became an international attraction. Whilst sharing their talents with passers-by, the sisters sold soap to tourists and donated all the proceeds to nearby hospitals, earning their bold moniker, The Soapgirls.
The Soapgirls went on to appear on South African Idols, “South Africa’s biggest reality competition”, the continent's equivalent to The X Factor (UK) or American Idol (US). As teenagers, the girls stormed to #1 on the album charts in South Africa with their dance-pop debut album ‘Xperience’. After being trapped in a record deal with Universal, the fierce act fought for their artistic and contractual freedom. The band’s DIY approach has seen them offering up rock and grunge anthems ever since. Boasting over 460,000 streams on Spotify alone, - notably the hard-hitting ‘Societys Reject’, ‘Jonny Rotten’ and ‘Heart In Bloom’ - and millions of views on their creative music videos, it’s of no doubt The Soapgirls are an act you can’t ignore. With an uncompromising and unapologetic approach to their live performance, The Soapgirls advocates for freedom of expression, encouraging the audience to lean into self-acceptance and self-expression. Between shows, the band Live Streams on YouTube and Instagram up to three times a week to its dedicated community of fans called ‘Soapsuds’. Gearing up for their upcoming US tour, The Soapgirls are setting out to bring their daring performance prowess to the States.
